They came around the two of them, taunting the players and goading them into a fight. One which Star was clearly more than happy to provide. Before Nari could say anything to stop him, the man's fist had slammed into the closest of the pirates - knocking the pirate to the floor, and leaving the trio before them confused and befuddled. Nari barely managed to break the confusion herself, staring at the entire scene playing out before her, only belatedly remembering that they were facing down a collection of pirates on an exploding ship.
"Well, that settles it." She said as she launched herself into motion, her weapon coming up and stabbing out at each of the trio, hoping to stun them into place long enough for Star to work up his more deadly attacks. Even as she was moving, her words continued, a plethora of curses and comments about their current situation. "This whole fucking trip sucks. I want nothing more than. To never step onto another fucking. Airship. Ever. A. Fucking. Gain."

Nari paused to look down the split corridor that they had come to, one angling slightly to the right, and the other heading off towards her left. She shook her head, as much in confusion as response to the question about her knowledge of airships, before shrugging. She bit her lip slightly as she answered, a sudden nervousness coming over her as she realised she'd come to a complete stop on an exploding airship, with no assured direction to go.
"Honestly? I know they fly in the air, and that's about it. Not really my area of expertise, in any way..." She looked to her left, a nagging feeling in her stomach as she considered the pathway. She had nothing to base it on other than direct instinct, and yet she felt a calling to head down the path itself. "This is likely nothing more than that feeling you get when you have choices and don't know how to make them, but...how about we head left and see what lies in wait for us?"

She had sighed heavily as they'd made their way back out, knowing that she had just signed on for a long day. Not that she had much else going on, and yet somehow she would've preferred to be given the option. Realising how it must have looked to the other player belatedly, she gave a soft smile and a shake of her head. Waving her hand, she tried to alleviate any ill air that she'd just created between the two of them with her response. "Last time I did this, it was a piecemeal quest. I guess it's nice that Cardinal adjusted that, it's just...it would be nice to get warnings, you know? Although...honestly, good chance I missed the update notice. It happens."
She tilted her head slightly as she considered the fact that she may have actually missed the notice, before shaking her head once more. There was nothing else to consider, other than the fact that they needed to complete the quest - and from the way things were going, likely all three parts of it. "Alright, lead on. Lyle awaits!"
She followed a pace behind Fae as they made their way through the town, her eyes scanning the area in a lazily manner as she tried to spy out more shops of interest. She noted that the town had changed a fair amount since she'd last been here, somehow feeling similar and different all at the same time. She waited patiently as Fae spoke with Lyle, the hammer sounds echoing in her ears even after they had stopped; a stark reminder of her very first career in Aincrad.
"Hmm...yeah the boarlets should be a lot easier, compared to the boars we had fought earlier. At least...they were when I did this quest. And besides, this time we're doing a different approach..." She gave a slight tap of her scythe against the ground, nodding to Fae in a knowing manner. "I'm going to join the fight with you, so that they hopefully focus on me, instead of you...or so that I can react a bit quicker. No point in me standing way off to the side while you do all the fighting. And no arguments."
-
Nari had followed Fae's retreat back to the city with a measure of exhaustion and happiness, her expression both distant and somewhat still concerned until they had passed through the gates. She'd smiled slightly at the mention of Fae's luck, chuckling as she considered the fact that she'd been stated to have the luck of the fae; a fact that Nari wasn't entirely sure was such a compliment in earnest. Still, the girl seemed happy, and Nari didn't want to ruin the moment by correcting anything. Keeping her mouth shut, she trailed behind as they made their way back to the alchemist, stepping after Fae in a way that kept her one pace behind at all times.
"I see the shop hasn't changed much..." Nari noted as she stepped in after Fae, standing off to the side as the girl procured the materials and worked on completing the quest itself. She was shocked with how much Zackariah had to say, noting the oddity only after it had occurred. But as there was mention of having to head to Lyle immediately, Nari found herself cocking her head in surprise. "Really...? That's unusual...I wonder if there was another change, that I missed..."
Her expression seemed disturbed by the thought, and she fell silent as she considered the whole thing. It was moments later before she realised that Fae was still waiting on an answer, one that she leapt to give as she saw her own insulting actions. "Oh, yeah! For sure I can tag along. I was just shocked that it didn't complete here...do you think it's going to run us through all three steps now?"
-
Each of the other members of the party had followed Nari's directive, their forms disappearing from sight as they'd pulled their teleportation crystals and returned back to the town where they had begun this silly quest. Nari had risked glances backwards as she'd help the creature at bay, determined to give them the chance they needed in order to escape, before making her own departure from the area. As soon as she'd seen the form of Mina disappearing into the ether - the final member of the group other than Nari herself, remaining - Nari had disengaged from her push against the monster.
She'd pulled the teleport crystal, holding it in her hand for a few seconds as she considered her action. She could, easily, return to the town with the others. To safety and security. To once again, return to the fields one day in the future. It would be so easy to simply stay here...and see what happens... She felt herself take a single step towards the creature again, the crystal in her hand almost forgotten. A soft shake of her head, however, and Nari raised the crystal up, activating it in a quick maneuver before watching as the world flashed before her eyes.
She confirmed the others safe arrival in town, before deciding she was done with her adventures. For the day, for the week...she wasn't entirely sure for how long, all she knew was that she needed a break. Waving to them, she gave a soft, sad smile before departing, a single collection of words left behind. "I'll see you guys around, sometime..."

She wasn't entirely sure herself, what she'd been asking. But as Hirru began to explain the intricacies of hunting down field bosses, the effects of the items that they had - and the general impact that those items could have upon the very essence of a fight, Nari realised that she wasn't really too concern with what her original question had been about. The simple knowledge that Hirru shared, the way his voice sounded as he spoke about it, all of it seemed to relax Nari in a way that she couldn't explain.
That was why, when his tone changed and his suggestion came about, she found herself startled out of the reverie that she had been stuck in. Slow to respond as she tried to register what was going on, her words came in a halting manner, and her eyes seemed to snap around as if confused. "Hmm...yeah...yeah let's do that. There's no point waiting around...if it's not going to show up. Better to do something more...useful, I guess. Uhm...yeah, this way, was it?"
She stood and followed the movements of Hirru, letting the green haired knight lead the way, if only for the time being. Something about the conversation seemed to nag at the back of her mind, although Nari couldn't quite explain why that was. Shrugging slightly, she wondered if it was simply the way in which he'd been explaining it, in comparison to their expected purpose out in the field. Whatever the reason...it's important information to tuck away. You never know when it's going to be useful, or how it'll help...kinda like many other things in this world...

The ship continued to rock and sway as the two of them pressed forwards, the bandit in their way no more than a small roadblock as Morningstar cut through him, pushing the man slightly out of the way. His form still hovered, barely standing as the health bar dropped significantly after Morningstar's eased swing struck it, causing it to freeze in place as the stun lock took over it's form. Nari gave a brief nod of thanks before pressing forwards herself, bringing her spear up against her shield as she prepared to take the pirate down.
"Is it just me...or does it seem like there's a lot...of pirates around here lately?" She called out even as she stepped forwards, her eyes not leaving her mark as she continued with her thoughts. The continuous rumbling and rocking of the ship made it hard to speak, between having to balance her weight, and time her comments in between what sounded like severe explosions below deck. The latter being something that Nari wanted nothing more than to avoid as long as they possibly could. "Like...this floor has them...the swashbuckler quest has them...some other floors they've been seen on...it's a calling, I say. A calling...to you..."

Nari gave a nod, her eyes staring off into the distance as she seemed to consider something. Shaking herself from her thoughts, she turned back to Fae and began following as the girl made her way back to town, the final material they needed found within the grasses. Nari found herself grinning at the simplicity of it all, and the irony of the fact of how easy it had been to collect them now that they had turned their focus away from the fighting. Almost casually, she gave Fae a soft poke, her grin widening into a full smile.
"I guess you may not be the best fighter in the word...but you certainly have no issues finding all the materials you need, in almost no time at that." Nari's head shifted to the right slightly, a soft tilt taking over as she seemed to think of something. Her smile dropped slightly, but no sign of a frown or of anger appeared. Instead, she seemed almost excited at whatever she had just thought up. "Which...is a very useful trait, in and of itself. A lot of frontline players are looking for materials and goods, constantly...even if you're not fighting on the frontlines, supply and demand are important...and it would be useful to have someone who's entire focus is on finding goods. Saves having to grind down mobs on top of fighting to clear the levels and floors."
-
Nari shook her head, thinking back to her own such ideals and thoughts. She'd once been far more like Fae than the girl realised, and the idea of seeing a near mirror image of her behaviour was almost entertaining. Holding back the laughter that was fighting to rise out of her, she instead decided to simply point out the similarities, uncertain whether the other player would believe her or not regardless. "I thought the same when I first started out, in earnest. I saw the amazing players fighting on the frontlines, and I thought I would never be like them. I mean, me...I was no warrior, no amazing fighter...I was nothing more than a scared girl at the time, trying desperately to just stay alive..."
She gazed out into the fields for a few moments, letting the silence pass as she remembered those times before. How different it had all been, and how far she had come. It still hurt, deep down inside, thinking about everything she had lost. But she found that now, with a purpose, she was able to overcome it - if only a single step at a time. Turning back to Fae, she placed a hand on the girl's shoulder, smiling broadly as she spoke once more, picking up her thoughts where she had left them. "...but now I fight among the best. I may not be the greatest warrior, or the fiercest during the floor bosses...but I give them what I can, and it's enough. That's all they're looking for...they don't need heroes, or stars...or even great warriors, really. They just need players willing to do what they can, to help."
-
Nari cocked her head to the side, considering the girl's question. She hadn't really planned for anything in particular, but she found her lips curling into a smile at the assumptions. "Well, I wouldn't say I make a habit of it, but it's definitely not the first time. I think...that one of the unspoken rules of gaining levels in this world, is that you need to be prepared to help out those lower levelled than yourself. In fact, it's fairly common for higher levelled players - especially those on the frontlines - to return to the lower floors and help out."
She gave a soft shrug, as if uncertain of how else to explain it. It seemed like whenever the push for a new floor had lulled slightly, the forefront would return to the start, looking for new players who were up and coming and needed some assistance getting started. Nari had help during her early days, and she knew that those she had helped since then had gone on to do the same thing - at least, some of them had. "I also didn't really have anything planned, yet...at least not for today...there's a bit of a lull in the push for the next floor, so it's safe to say that my...services...aren't really needed anywhere else right now. Besides, it's relaxing to come back and hang out with the new players. Reminds me of my own early days, if that sounds weird."
-
Nari felt the same moment of fear at the mention of Avoryn's disappearance, but the spotting and retrieval of the cloak that Fae had leant to the other player alleviated any further concerns. She gave a slight nod as Fae continued talking, her mind drifting slightly at the thought of what could have occurred if Nari hadn't been there to watch over the two. The good news is, you were here, this time. You can't be there every time, for every single person...you can only do what you can.
She snapped back to attention at the mention of the continuation and completion of the quest. Normally, she would've been enthused to complete the quest, but everything about this day had been going oddly, and Nari wasn't entirely sure what else could happen. Still, she knew that they were close to it's completion, and that it would be an entire waste to simply throw everything away now. You're almost done, and Fae has you here so you should be safe. There shouldn't be anything on this floor that you can't handle. Throwing on a smile and giving a wave of her hand, Nari gave a partial bow towards the other player in jest as she spoke aloud. "Well then, on your leave, let's get this over and done with shall we? I'll be happy to be back behind the safety of the town's walls, I think...and I think you would be as well?"
She left the question hanging as she waited for Fae to lead onwards. They still needed to finish up and head back, and although only a small amount of time had passed, Nari felt like she had been out in the field the entirety of the day. There was no denying that she would be happy to return to the walls of civilisation and find some comfort and relaxation within.
-
The boars had moved quickly, their charge coming in against Fae like a pair of tanks slamming into the poor girl. Nari had barely seen as the girl had fallen to the ground, her feet moving as she pushed off against the rock. The scythe appeared in her hand even as she charged forwards, her entire body springing into action like a coiled toy suddenly popping from the box. Within seconds she had stepped in front of Fae, her weapon slashing outwards as she attempted to strike the beasts.
She turned back towards Fae, reaching down with a hand as she smiled gently. "You're alright now, although that was a lot closer than I am comfortable with. For now...let's maybe keep away from fighting things in large groups, yeah?"
There was no anger in her tone, or any real disappointment. If anything, one could say that she sounded relieved - relieved that she had managed to move quick enough to put down the threat to the lower levelled player. Nari didn't even want to imagine what could've happened if she hadn't been there, if she hadn't been watching and waiting. Thankfully her concentration on the fight had been enough, this time. "Maybe, for now, let's focus on just gathering the materials we need. And then we can head back and get this whole adventure done with. Maybe even grab a cup of something warm to drink, to chase away the chill of what happened here?"

Nari bit her lip as Mina called the retreat. She wanted nothing more than to stay and fight, but she knew that if this thing's healing kept up, they'd slowly be ground down into nothingness. Stepping in front of the others, she pulled a teleport crystal from her pouch and tossed it towards Mina, before slamming the shield and spear into place. Without looking behind her, she called out to the group, her voice raised in order to ensure they all heard her.
"Do as Mina says. We're in trouble if we don't retreat. I'll stay back as guard, while the rest of you escape." She didn't look back even as the smile crossed her face, her next words coming a slight bit quieter as she said them aloud, as if to reassure herself more than the others. "And don't worry, I'll be following as soon as you're all gone and safe. I don't intend on dying in this spot, against this ugly thing."
Shaking off the smile, she stepped forward towards the creature, stabbing outwards with her spear. While the weapon didn't connect, it was enough to drive the thing further back, giving the others more space as Nari continued to harass and thrust at it. She didn't look back, instead continuing to push the thing further and further away from the group, one small step at a time.

She'd found herself trawling along through the streets without a purpose. It had become her nightly habit, one which she had picked up...well, she wasn't quite sure where. Few players were out at this time, and those NPCs that could be seen wandering were nothing more than bodies that shifted in and out of focus. For some time now, Nari had been wondering what the purpose of it all was - she wasn't so much depressed, as she was wondering if Aincrad was as bad as they'd been taught to believe. So much time had passed that she'd wondered if returning to the real world was...well, really what she wanted.
"Maybe it's time for me to take a break, let someone else push forward." Her eyes suddenly drifted over the passing bodies, noticing a younger girl who seemed determined in her stride. Without thinking, Nari approached the player, touching their arm and speaking as soon as their eyes had landed on her form. "Here, consider this a gift, for your future endeavours."

She'd winced outwardly before she could stop herself as the boar slammed into Fae's form, a small portion of the player's health bar shrivelling away beneath the assault. Without thought, she'd pushed off from the terrain she'd been leaning against, managing only to stop herself from stepping forwards towards the other player. Glancing over the party in front of her, she confirmed that Fae wasn't in the greatest of positions, with Avoryn having fallen off to the side as the boars turned their full attention on the lone remaining player.
"If you need me to step in, just let me know...Just, be careful, yeah?" Nari shifted on her feet again, a look of concern crossing her face as she glanced at the various combatants before her. She knew that she could - likely - wipe away both boars with a single stroke of her scythe, but this was meant to be Fae's quest and moment, and she didn't want to take away from that. "Just...don't push yourself too far. If things look really bad, I'm stepping in no matter what you say though. Got it?"
She figured that the reminder wasn't necessary, and yet she said it aloud anyways. It was always better to reiterate expectations before hand, rather than having people get upset after she had done something; that much she had learnt during her time in Aincrad. Besides, I'd rather have them being upset with me, and alive, than added to a list of names...
