  1. This [ahole]... I'll kill him--!!

With her hands now free, she retrieved her blade from her menu, bringing it back into her hands. And with one quick, precise motion, raised herself into the air -- a fine, overwhelming distance from being stuck in a pit of lava. She grappled onto a nearby ledge as soon as she was able to, clambering up the rock face to reach ground again. The sounds of struggle were getting louder, definitely. NIGHT had to wonder if this really was the non-energetic cat from the day just earlier.

As her eyes finally managed to see what the fight was about, there Nyanko was, as the stranger tossed him back onto the ground. The cat got back up, his fur raised in anger and fury, and his claws out to maim his foe with. He spat at the figure, who'd begun to adjust their hood once again, the pure white cloak now tattered and dusty with dirt.

  2. "Nyanko?! Nyanko?!" She'd half expected to hear a beep in response, but as her eyes checked her bag, she realized that the flap was loose.

    dammit dammit dammit dammit dammit--

A screech, sounding like a cat, and then a scream. "Holy-- get away from me--!" More hissing, and sounds of struggle from above. NIGHT wanted to feel relief, but she wasn't sure if the darkness she'd seen moving earlier really was her cat, or if it was something else entirely. Instead, she tried to focus on getting out of her predicament.

Wasn't she in a situation like this? Straight would work, right? She had to find solid ground first -- there was no telling, if she dislodged her sword right now -- that she'd be able to make it back up safely. Shifting her hands over to her blade, she carefully pulled herself towards the rocky ledge -- closer to the lava, but at least she would have her feet on floor then.

  3. "Hahahaha!" The voice mocked, from up above. "Sorry. It was an accident, I swear!"

Jaw locked. Palms clammy. Thoughts not coming to mind. The only thing she could spit back was, "Jesus [mf] Christ dude, what the hell was that for?!"

"Like I said, it was an accident. You don't really think I would kill you right there like that, would you?"

NIGHT felt her grip ready to loosen, knuckles searing with pain as she clenched onto her hilt with severity. She swung her other arm over to hold onto it, hoping the sword was well wedged into the wall to support her weight and force. "Like I give a [sh] about what you think now! What the [f] man?!"

She looked up, but she couldn't see them peering over the ledge. Instead, she noticed a black shadow, jumping up to safety, and her fear ridden thoughts went to Nyanko.

  4. "It's deep down there, isn't it?"

"Yeah, it is." NIGHT bristled, mostly out of fear of how vulnerable she was, more so about the height with which she would fall at, rather than the idea of falling into the pit of lava itself. Both of them at once made for an even more dangerous combination, though, and she gulped, thinking about--

She felt a shove, before she could complete or register her thoughts. One moment she was fine, the next she began to topple, down, down far into the pit. In an instant, her fears were realized, as though the reaper himself was there to catch her when she fell.

    She didn't want that.

Halfway through the fall, she was able to snap back to reality, pulling her sword out and slamming it into the stone near her. It stopped her fall, but there was only so much time before she would begin again.

  5. The two continued their way down the mountain. This time, however, the stranger skid down the mountain's face, a short distance away towards the pass they'd seen earlier. When they stopped, they turned over to their partner in crime, waving for them to follow. NIGHT frowned, gingerly taking steps at her own pace to get to the bottom safely.

They sputtered in arrogance as the adventurer took her time. "Coward."

"Hey!" She retorted, struggling to find her footing from one rockhold to another. "I'm sorry if not everyone is as good at parkour as you are." The figure let out a laugh, before continuing on their way, at a speed of which even NIGHT could catch up to with a brisk walk.

The duo reached the desolate crossing, a large lava fall on their left, drippling out of Mount Stylahm. Peering over the edge, NIGHT could see the pool of boiling red liquid, wrapping and mixing over each other.

  6. "Information, then? I assume that's what you deal with." It was the best guess that the woman could come up with, but the stranger shook their head, clicking their tongue this time. "Not quite. This one's just a titbit that's on the house." They gestured again with their dagger. "Look. From there, you can get to Mount Stylahm." They moved their hand towards a peak in the distance. "And that's where you should train at."

"Caverns full of monsters and lava, winding tunnels cast in light and shadow... And the potential for so much loot." They chuckled, swinging their dagger to and fro as they spouted their spiel. NIGHT instinctively took a step back, not wanting to get close to the small blade. "That's your best bet. Your prize for sniffing me out, is that tip."

They spun their blade a little more, before returning it into its holster, by their thigh, leaving NIGHT to wonder about their motivations once more.

  7. "Let's see..." their voice trailed away as they held the blade in their hands nonchalantly. "What if... Ah. You were up here to train, right? Getting stronger, as most warriors would be?" Her eyes narrowed at the stranger's questioning. "What's your game here, exactly?"

"Hey," they retorted, turning around with their arms spread open wide. "I'm not the one in the game here, am I?" A malicious laugh, as they turned around. NIGHT couldn't help but sigh and groan, her shoulders tensing up in annoyance. "Sorry, I couldn't help myself. The opportunity was right there! It was golden!" Another small chuckle, before they added. "I have nothing planned, exactly. I'm merely an observer, that's all."

The figure continued playing with the dagger in their hands, slashing away at the air with it, before pointing downwards, and clicking with his cheek. He motioned NIGHT's gaze to fall onto a pass near the mountain's base. "That's what I can offer you, in return."

  8. "So, how has your day been?" They asked, glancing over their shoulder. The downhill battle seemed to turn into a stroll instead. In their hand, they played with a dagger, swinging it to and fro. The sight of the knife was enough to give NIGHT chills, but she replied, pushing away her fears. "I don't know, shouldn't I be asking you how my day was instead?"

"Hah! Rich," they replied, in a tone that felt familiar. "I thought your trek was going fine, until you decided to turn around." They tiled their head, catching their blade's handle in their palm. "Why was that, anyway? You were getting close to the top."

"It's too warm." NIGHT wasn't sure what lead her to respond, truthfully but still with snark. "You would've known that too, I guess, if I'd continued going on upwards."

"I would've, yes," the stranger agreed, tracing their ridged blade with their other hand, now out of their pocket. "I'll have to thank you for saving me from experiencing that."

  9. A pause. "Then I guess I'll stay this way."

"Aren't you going to take off your hood?" She asked, folding her arms. "It's only polite to do so."

"Maybe one day," they mentioned. "Not today. You'll get to see it, if you're curious." The figure hopped down from the tall rock, landing on two bent feet with ease. "Since I have you as company now," they said, "Why don't you walk with me? You were heading back down, right?"

"Yeah," NIGHT replied, still suspicious. She let the stranger walk forward, before tailing behind them, hesitant in her steps. "So, uh, did someone send you to track me?"

"... No. None of your information brokers did, at least." They added, stuffing their hands in their pockets. They seemed worn and large, suggesting a male's physique, but they were only as tall as her. Who was this stranger? Would Cardinal send random people to stalk players from time to time?

  10. As she turned around to begin her walk downhill, just out the corner of her vision, she caught something white. It contrasted the floor's colours of red dirt and darkness easily. A hint of cloth that vanished behind a tall rock, she approached it gingerly to look if there was something hidden behind it.

Nothing, but a chuckle from somewhere else. Above? NIGHT found a figure squatting on the top of the boulder, draped in a white cloak, hiding their face in shadows. "Sorry," they said, voice a little feminine, but generally indiscernible. "I didn't expect you'd actually catch sight of me."

"I--" she tried to say, glancing above their head. A name? There wasn't one. This must've been an NPC then, she guessed. "Who are you, again?"

"Wouldn't you like to know, weather girl?"

Figures. Furrowing her brow, she added, "How long have you been following me...?"

They chuckled. "And why would I tell?"

"Because otherwise, you'd look incredibly creepy?"

  11. The journey up was quiet, and NIGHT was more than persistent this time. Past the second pitstop, she headed further up the mountain, the wind dry and howling as her ears trained on a distant bubbling sound, like rumbling rocks collapsing down a cliff. And another, like rain falling onto concrete. Was that really the sound of lava?

No, strike that. She should've become familiar to the noise by now. But this time, it was too much to handle. It was hard to even hear her own thoughts. Should... should she turn back?

--- NIGHT didn't want to. Not yet. But she had this ominous sensation as she pushed herself further up the mountain. Pressure exerting itself on the woman, shadows dancing in menacing ways, and the metal of her armour starting to burn into her. If she hadn't had Survival equipped, she figured, she may have been taking more damage than just singes on her skin.

The woman got a glimpse of the magma skittering the edge of the slope, her would-be destination turning out to be another stop on the way up the mountain, before heading back down dejectedly, unable to progress further without putting herself in harm's way.

  12. "You need some help with that?" NIGHT asked, trying to play the question off casually, placing a hand on her hip. But there was no way to reclaim the tension back from a sudden greeting like that. Instead, maybe she could play on her experience with it as leverage, trying to recall what she could from her first time attempting the quest. "There's actually a variant species you have to tackle to obtain the quest item," she informed. "And while the quest is intended for lower-levelled players... The variant's the trouble. It's stronger and tougher, not exactly ideal for new loners to fight on their own."

The player folded her arms, expecting a refusal. She really should learn how to make less drastic entrances like that. Keeping that note in her mind, she added, eyes lazily trailing to the newbie's cloak that continued to flutter in the wind. "I don't exactly see a party with you, so it's why I figured to ask. I wouldn't want someone to risk losing their lives if I can help it."

She extended a hand anyway, just to see if he would take her up on her offer. "Either way, it's nice to meet you. As my handle suggests, I'm NIGHT."

And his was Morningstar. But she wasn't about to take away his introduction away from him, so she kept her mouth shut about that.

    @Morningstar

  13. NIGHT squinted at Noctua's ankle as she tried walking again. "I mean, if you say so," she offered, not really knowing much about how a broken foot should look like. "I didn't know healing would be this quick though. I should keep that in mind for the future. Ah, our food--!"

Instead of taking it slow, her excitement reignited her vigour, and she tore down the streets towards the teleporter. She waved the others over, bringing up the light to wash them away when everyone had gathered, to find themselves in the centre of the Town of Beginnings. Home sweet home.

Then came her mad dash over to the shop. It was through a series of different alleys, garnished with ivies and signs of different kinds, all indicating different stalls available in the north wing. Shabu-Rai stood at the intersection between three paths, its exterior designed out of wood in a modern Japanese style, its lumber well maintained, showing little to no signs of mold. Impressive, for being in a dark corner of Aincrad like this.

NIGHT waited for her party members to get there, bouncing on her feet excitedly. She couldn't wait to experience a brief sense of normalcy again.

    @Yukiro

  14. This time, NIGHT wasn't too interested in delving into her thoughts any further. As the skies darkened, it was better for her eyes to be trained to the floor, rather than absentmindedly looking elsewhere. She'd have better luck watching her steps than to keep out for enemies that might be lurking about; at this point, she was certain she'd be able to take them on. After all, as she watched the energy meter hit its limit, she was combat ready with that rest she had earlier.

But the trek up was boring, if not rigorous. She felt the heat from earlier return to haunt her skin, and gently blew out to the air around her in a futile attempt to cool herself, if not convince herself about the temperature. Her thoughts went to wondering what was at the peak of the mountain instead. Maybe she'd find something cool to report back to her informants. Maybe she'd get something more than what she'd bargained for.

  15. NIGHT took a nap. She shouldn't have, but she did, anyway. Nyanko needed the rest, and so did she, bundling up in her sleeping back at a small indent in the side of the mountain. Sure, it was still daylight out, but a quick rest wasn't going to hurt anyone, right? Letting out a tired yawn, she let her cat's heartbeat and her own breathing lull her into sleep's embrace.

When they woke, the sun was starting to set, hanging lower in the sky than before. Daylight was burning faster than NIGHT had anticipated. The golden hues of the sun's rays were lost upon the crackly, rocky red environment, but NIGHT took in its majesty anyways, as she packed up her equipment. She set a sleepy familiar back into her waist bag despite tiny squeaks of protests to get up and face what was left of the day. A finger tickling his fur, the player made sure her kitten was truly safe in her carrier, before taking off once again towards the summit of Mount Kazan.

  16. "Haah-- hahah..." NIGHT was basically gasping for air by now. Toppling onto the ground on her butt, she laid her blade to the ground beside her, calling Nyanko close. She brought out another bottle of water, taking sips from it as her cat rushed over, nuzzling up to her hand for affection. Cute, but NIGHT wasn't up to adorableness right now. She just wanted some rest.

Laying down, she watched Nyanko move over to check if she was doing alright. She was, but the adventurer appreciated the attention anyway. Petting the cat on the back, she brought out her cat toy, just for kicks to see if her kitten would respond.

The joke was on her, because it did. Her kitten was fully engaged with the colourful feathers, dancing around in the air once again, and lunged at them relentlessly. Joke's on the elementals from earlier, the joy of feeling them vanish from the face of Aincrad couldn't beat the joy she felt watching Nyanko enjoy himself.

  17. NIGHT was almost out of breath at this point. She wasn't built for speed so much as she was for stamina. Well, wearing her equipment made her that way, at least. There was no way she'd be able to last any more running by now. But watching her energy bar, she waited until the last tick dropped in, before skidding to a halt, near the original ledge she'd fought the markhor goats on.

Wait. I'd seriously gone this far down? Okay, that's not fair anymore.

As she dropped Nyanko to the ground, she brandished her blade from her sheathe, frenzied, slamming its edge into the ground. It hit nothing, of course, but that wasn't her intended move. Swapping her grip on the sword backwards, she rushed up against one of the elementals and bashed the glowing light into its head. NIGHT felt its liquid scorch her hand through her gloves, but the searing heat was nothing compared to her joy of watching her opponents finally fade away into nothing.

  18. And what about our friends back home representing our fiery mountain of death itself? Oh, it looks like they made the turn just fine as well! Good job, amigos! Looks like they're gaining on her; with that awkward stumble earlier, NIGHT seems to be losing her lead! But her two feet keep on going, she's maintaining the distance between her foes real well!

In fact, check that out! With craftsmanship by Bahr himself, NIGHT's threads of dexterity shine when Lava Elemental #1 takes a brilliant swing at her -- and she's gone! The crowd goes wild at where she's been, but the whole time, our adventurer has only been ducking! What a shock! What quick reaction speed! You'd think Lava Elemental #3 had also learned this lesson, and he swings twice, one at her and one below! Oh. but NIGHT stuns them both by side-stepping completely out of range! Will they ever catch up to her? The tension is excruciating!

  19. The race was on! With NIGHT in the lead, her little meower Nyanko at the front seat, squeaking for instructions, we have team Darksiders, outrunning today's challengers!

Right behind them, the dastardly devils, is team Scorchfire! Consisting of two magical creatures, bodies composed entirely of flame and living magma, these figments work hard to defend their territory up Mount Kazan. The chase was on when NIGHT had issued the guards a challenge, setting their friends on fire -- metaphorically of course! -- and turning them to dust, this time literally! Of course our defendants would be mad, but what they weren't expecting, was a race for the ages!

Oh, here comes the curved slope! Nyanko's squeaking makes it easier for NIGHT to process what's happening in the world around her -- at least that's what my informant tells me! And she makes the turn with a skid -- careful where that foot goes! She nearly went right off the ledge with that one!

  20. Okay then. On the count of three. One -- Ow! Hey!

If the Lava Elementals weren't working in tandem earlier, well, they were now. She deftly blocked a blow that was coming for her, the firey, goopy fist slamming solidly into her blade's side, warping the metal underneath it. She hissed, trying to break free from the hold, when the other blindsided NIGHT with a warm, seething punch, scarring her cheek and taking a chunk out from her health.

    Dammit, dammit, dammit--

The heat would subside, she knew that, and the system wasn't going to give anyone long-lasting damage to their physical self. But damn, did that blow hurt. She cursed, abandoning her count, and ran off down the mountain instead. Sheathing her blade, she picked up Nyanko, who was concerned by her feet, and left her opponents to eat her dust as they chased after her. If all she had to do was buy time, then that's what she would do.

  21. Not even. The Lava Elementals weren't going to give her the time of day for it. Ducking and weaving through the blows, their liquidish forms only served to heat her blade up further, distorting Doombringer's form slightly and leaving it with a char. NIGHT sucked in air in frustration, continuously trying to swipe at them with her sword. It only helped that, since she was on the attack, her opponents weren't capable of striking back either. The player continued to curse anyway, not wanting her friend's hard work to be moulded by creatures unknown on the field.

Taking a bit of a retreat, she sighed, wondering if it was a good move to abscond. If her calculations were right, it would be better if she just hung onto waiting for her energy to restore, before unleashing an attack to decimate all her foes at once. That would be her plan then -- either go big, or go home (metaphorically).

  22. Prime example of why NIGHT should be paying more attention in combat. Let's go over the facts:

    1. When she'd looked away for a split second, an elemental had followed up on her with a gut punch, scalding her stomach and leaving her breathless.

    2. Trying to stop herself, she sank her blade into the dirt, almost hitting Nyanko who was near her at the time.

    3. Her Tempest had shocked and slayed only two of her opponents, leaving the other two she'd encountered early open to attacking her.

    4. She was definitely running out of options with her limited energy pool.

NIGHT cursed, and sucked on the side of her cheek, annoyed. She continued to fiddle with the grasp on her blade. It wasn't going to be easy dealing with two enemies when she was on her last legs. Was she going to have to abscond again?

Maybe, if luck was on her side, she could take out at least one of them before considering that option.

  23. Perhaps, if NIGHT was a little more aware, she would've realized that her greatest skill was probably not as great as an opener in combat as she thought it would be.

Instead, her visceral cuts struck true to her enemies consistently, and this was going according to plan, yes. However, the moment she made herself known and gave her enemy the chance to strike back... that was a folly whose onus was on her, and her alone. With a swing, one of the lava elementals she was going up against struck her hard into her arm, scathing and charring her arm, never mind her armour. She winced, after jumping backwards, shaking the pain away. Every strike was a reminder that there was a better move she could take to keep her out of harm's way, and death's grasp.

She glanced behind her, to Nyanko, who was watching from a distance away. As long as he was safe from the elementals and their fire...

  24. After his meal, Nyanko was up for some play time, it seemed. While NIGHT was cleaning and returning the bowl to her inventory, he pawed and chewed on the feathers that were only laying on the floor, unmoving. What a strange, energetic cat. She pet him gently, before waving the toy around. At least he was up for playing now.

"It's a little strange, Nyanko," she chided gently, watching as he jumped up to grab the toy. "Shouldn't you be conserving energy at this point of the day?"

The cat didn't respond, too focused on catching the enigmatic colourful feathers. She chuckled, as his head continued bobbing up and down and all around. At last, she let him have his catch, grabbing the feathers by his two paws, nibbling at the stick with his fangs. "Awww... Good job!"

NIGHT ran her fingers over his fur some more, before deciding they should head onwards, storing the toy away, much to Nyanko's disappointment.

  25. Who knew Mount Kazan was so accommodating?

It was a jest, of course, as NIGHT began to feel the heat bear down on her, Nyanko not looking to well for his troubles either. As the two stopped for a rest, she brought out some water -- a bottle for her, and a bowl's worth for her kitten. With a tilt of her head, she chugged down the liquid, taking large gulps as her familiar took tentative licks instead. When the adventurer had emptied her container, she watched it shatter with a crunch, smashing it in her hand.

On the other hand, she took back her kitten's bowl when it was empty, filling it with food instead. "You've gotta be hungry by now," she stated, portioning out the meat in the paper package, much to Nyanko's vocal delight. When the cat began his feast, NIGHT brought out the feather wand from earlier, setting it down beside his bowl. He took a glance at it, before returning to his meal, nonchalant about the object, and NIGHT smiled. By now, it was enough for her if he just got used to seeing it at all.
