  2. The air within the training site was hushed a vast wooden hall where the chill of the fourth floor lingered just beyond the thin paper doors. A faint scent of burning incense curled through the space, soft and grounding, mixing with the rhythm of Miyuki’s breath. Snow fell gently beyond the window, each flake a whisper of silence made visible. Her mentor stood several paces away, still as the statue of an old deity. For a long moment, neither spoke. The only sound was the soft creak of wood as the fire’s warmth shifted. Finally, the mentor’s voice broke the silence deep, even, and patient
  3. The silence in the dojo deepened as the old swordsman rose from his seat beside the fire. His movements were deliberate, almost weightless, like someone who had long since learned to walk without disturbing the world around him. He crossed the room with unhurried grace, each step matching the faint rhythm of the wind brushing against the walls. “Tell me,” he began, his voice as calm as the falling snow outside, “what is a blade?” Miyuki hesitated. The question seemed simple but his gaze told her otherwise. “A weapon,” she answered carefully, “used to protect or to kill.” The man
  4. The snowfall had quieted to a gentle drift, each flake descending like a whispered breath upon the still world. Miyuki stood at the edge of the glade where the message had directed her a clearing nestled between towering evergreens, their boughs weighed down by ice. In the center sat a simple structure, half-buried in snow: a small dojo built of pale wood and stone, its roof bowed beneath winter’s weight. Thin trails of smoke curled from a lantern above the door, swaying softly in the wind. Her boots crunched as she stepped forward. The air felt different here thinner, quieter. Each exhal
  5. Reytac looked over his shoulder to see that Cascade had managed to actually pull of her tame, and was now cuddling the raven that had approached her, petting it and playing with it lightly as she got used to it. Some of the guarded nature of her face had faded, her eyes lighting up with wonder as she interacted with the small bird, and Rey let out a soft chuckle before turning his attention back to his own taming 'opponent'. The raven that had approached him was still turning up its beak at the Familiar Food that he had set out, fluffing its wings and hopping around the bowl to approach

  9. "It'd be nice to see something that isn't just more trees. I feel like, that's nearly everything I've seen here? I know there's a desert floor, but I skipped it on accident. I saw the snow floor - floor four, I think? But.. It was just a snowy forest. More. Trees." Reytac snorted and rubbed the bridge of his nose. He turned to ask the bartender for a glass of water to go with the alcohol, pausing, when he remembered that there was no one here but the two of them. That the alcohol that they were putting into their systems was just there with no source. He exhaled, and pulled a water canteen ou

  11. ’Well, it’s certainly…something…’ Maggie commented, eyeing the creation on the table as Nari buried her hands in her face. She could hear Onora stifling a giggle off to the side as she tried anything to ignore the commentary. She had been going for an easy to carry, well nutritious cereal bar of sorts mixed with dried meats. What had come out, however, was anything but – in fact, Nari would’ve simply called it an abomination, if she’d been able to do so at the time. ’Let’s just…get this over and done with. This was more painful than becoming a blacksmith.’ She took a few moments to collec
  12. ’You’ll just have to wait and see, I think.’ Onora pushed herself up as Nari found the final material piece – an item that looked a bit like a potato to her eyes – and dusted herself off. ’I think you have just about everything?’ Nari gave a small nod, pushing herself up and following the blonde back to the gates, and the town beyond. She gave a single small wave of greeting to the guard as they passed back through, before following the winding streets back to the tavern itself. ’Oh, perfect! You got everything you need? Right, follow me and we’ll get started!’ The voice of the taver
  13. Onora seemed to nod in response, likely uncertain of how to respond to the claim. It was an odd topic, Nari knew, and not one that anyone outside of the frontliners could really comment upon. Finding it somewhat depressing, she decided to change the topic as quickly as she could, hoping that they could leave the depressive aura behind entirely. ’I wonder what sort of interesting concepts I’ll get to cook up…once I find this final material.’ She frowned slightly as another push through the nearby brush brought up nothing of use. Her foraging skills were failing her, in the moment, and she
  14. ’That sounds…almost intimate, in a way.’ Onora shifted down onto the ground beside Nari, her eyes locking into the distance. Silence sat between them for a few seconds as Nari considered what to say in response. There was, in a poetic sense, a plausibly intimate connection between frontliners – those that got along, anyways. She couldn’t say that it was a connection everyone had, though. There were some that Nari had come across that she couldn’t stand, and would argue any sort of intimate connection with vehemently, even if she was able to work alongside them temporarily. ’I guess it’s w
  15. The final boar exploded, and Nari noticed with annoyance that she was a single material short of the required collection amount. Sighing to herself, she turned to glance at Onora, the woman grinning at her in some measure of excitement and happiness. Whatever she had been about to say, Nari found herself held up as she took in the woman’s excitement. ’We’ve never really fought before, have we? That was…wow. Is this what the frontliners are like?’ Onora seemed to bounce between her two feet, and as Nari settled onto the grass – in a measure of exhaustion and a desire to do nothing more tha
  16. The third boar exploded as Nari shifted herself once more, allowing the creatures to collide off the shield. She brought her spear up, stabbing forward and catching the pair as they raced passed and into the distance, the attack enough to end the one that was already barely maintaining its gait. The final creature turned back around slowly, a sign that it was weakening quickly as it attempted to prepare itself for another charge. Nari knew that the fight was just about finished, so long as she could land a single, final attack. She didn’t say anything as she stood up, letting the shield a
  17. Nari gave a half shrug, not turning around as the boars slammed into her again. She didn’t have a chance to stab either of the creatures, her focus on communicating with Onora limiting her ability to hit them back as they retreated from reach. ’I don’t know…it was scary the first couple of times, I think…but now it’s just…second nature, I guess? Honestly it’s comforting knowing how well protected I am. Creatures like these can’t really possess any danger to me, so I’m okay with it…bigger creatures, like the floor bosses…well that’s a slightly different story, but even there I’m somewhat safe.’
  18. Two of the boars exploded into nothingness as Nari reset herself, Onora slipping in behind her and placing a hand upon her shoulder that caused a small chill to run up her spine. It was a comforting feeling, but one that she hadn’t expected, and Nari found herself fighting the urge to turn around as the pair of remaining boars rose to their feet once more. Stabilising themselves, the pair slowly turned towards Nari, suddenly wary of the shield wielding danger that had prevented their concurrent attacks thus far. Nari knew that her phalanx movement was limited in dealing damage, but also k
  19. The sliver of truth Castor revealed encouraged her to hold onto that smile. Her hand shifted up, trailing past her temple, and running fingers loosely through her hair just as the thrum of bass gave way to the gentle strum of a guitar. She’d have forgotten she was wearing that mask if she hadn’t brushed against its edge. ”Same here. The rare part, at least.” The smile went a bit wry. Hers were not the memories of years gone by, but the fantasies of what could have been. University was stressful, but she had never found her relief at the bottom of a bottle or upon a darkened dance floor. She wa
  20. They acted almost exactly as Nari expected – shaking themselves to their feet before launching into another charge. Nari’s shield bore the majority of the impact, shaking slightly as the boars were shoved off to the side and out of any chance of impacting her or Onora at all. She waited for them to pass by, before lashing out with her spear in another wide arc, the weapon’s blade slashing across three of the creatures and allowing Onora the safety and security she needed to rush forward and stab into their flanks again. ’Almost done here, and then maybe we can head back and get a cookin’.
  21. Nari rushed slightly forwards, settling herself into a controlled, ready position with her shield out before her, and the spear levelled on its edge. She waited as the boars turned to face her, their hooves pawing at the ground as they prepared themselves to charge. They came as a singular group, the ground rumbling as their bodies surged across the small distance towards her – only to find her form moving in a dance, the spear swinging outwards and slamming into the sides of their forms. The boars were thrown into confusion as the blade of the spear slashed along their sides, causing the
  22. Her attention was quickly drawn away by movement, something fluttered in and out of the corner of her eye. She turned to see another curious Raven hopping its way towards her. CAW Perhaps I have been chosen also. I suppose i get to try my luck with taming. she smiled softly and knelt down, sitting criss cross. With a slow, deliberate wave of her hand her menu appeared, she selected the item and it appeared before her. The food they had been given. She popped the lid off and sat it in front of her. Her voice resonated through the air calmly, "Hello lovely, are you hungry?" she o
  23. ’I…wasn’t expecting a tavern.’ Nari heard Onora giggle in response to her clear confusion. She’d expected to attend a bakery, or a gourmet cooking establishment – the fact that the training occurred within a tavern seemed almost foreign in concept to Nari. Her eyes shifted to the blonde at her side, the small weasel upon her shoulder chattering away in what was clearly meant to be a humorous sound, and she found herself blushing heavily. ’Well I mean, come on. I know this is a fantasy world, but a tavern?’ Nari shook her head, before stepping inside. The tavern itself was cleanly enough,
  24. From the corner of his eye Reytac could see another corvid shuffling forward, hopping towards where Cascade was, but his attention was on the raven that had approached him. Carefully, he pulled his hand to his inventory and pulled out the bowl of Familiar Food that the beast Tamer had given him. He spun the lid open and set it down on the ground between him and the large raven, which fluffed its feathers as it looked down at the offering, then back up to him. Caw. The sound was almost dismissive, but the bird didn't leave, yet. Instead it hopped around a little, stari
  25. When the makeshift cross had fallen apart, Astra had seemingly snapped out of his trance, and was brought back to reality. It was a simple mistake, but even he should've known better than to interact with the resting places of the dead - especially those that seem cursed. Astra looked towards the looming ghost that had appeared with a sheepish demeanor, his embarrassment for waking the ghost ever apparent on his face. What else has he fixed? He just got here! Before Astra could even offer to try and help with his mistake, his mentor was already on it - using his inclination for cra
  26. "Yeh...." Mari said quietly, allowing herself the rare chance to close her eyes. Feeling safe enough with the man to be able to do so. She'd let her head rest against the bark of the tree. "I loved it...it felt like one of the few things I could control... so when I got my first profession...it was only natural I picked performer. But...as you said...it began to feel more like a job." Mari lifted her head, opening her eyes to watch Jomei as he carefully turned her violin around in his hands. She felt a swell of pride when he lingered on the ornate L burned into the back of it. 27. Earning a Living: Cook Nari’s shop had already taken a transition from its regular design, the inclusion of her smithy and storefront recreating the once musically focused work area into something else entirely. She’d begun her battle in creating weaponry, armour and tools once more – but she’d gained inspiration from the sudden ability to expand her skillsets. So much so, that she found herself considering it one morning, and wondering if there wasn’t more she could do. ’All I’m saying, is you don’t want to over work yourself.’ Onora sighed as she glanced again at the newly purchas
