  1. Maybe going after living things wasn't entirely a good idea - bugs? Easy? Birds that are known to be territorial and attack? Not so easy.

"Ok...Back on track. If I head to the lake, there is bound to be fauna and flora close by, and the more things that crop up the more chances I have for materials. If I calm down and look at this logically... I could literally try anything...even this grass..." Ceres said as she knealt down to pluck a handful of tall grass with the gatherer skill activated.

Nope. Fail. She let the handful go and the wind picked it up and carried it away. Her peaceful day was beginning to turn into a stupid stressful mess.

"This is getting REALLY frustrating ya know!" Ceres spat.

Wasn't this quest supposed to be SIMPLE? Hell it was the FIRST QUEST made available to anyone, so why was it so damn hard to get something? To pick up materials? Geez.... some people did this for a living. They had the patience of a saint.

"Maybe materials are more valuable than col." Ceres mused.

  2. Wandering around aimlessly wasn't going to get her anywhere. Ceres opened up her map on the HUD - noting that to the right there were a few red dots. Boars, no doubt. Good. She knew where to avoid then. The woman veered left, heading back toward town in a large loop. Between her and the town there was a small blue circle. A lake? That could be promising. There was water there...maybe some plants...fish? Bugs?

"If only there was a proper guide to all this besides the basics of 'find it yourself' I get this place is meant to be broad, open...and limitless but really...how much can one take?"

    chirrup, churrip

The flittering sounds snapped Ceres out of her thoughts, she blinked and glanced around for the sound. Just to the right of her was a white and black bird, its head tilted to the ground as it hopped to and fro. "Oh." She knew exactly what kind of bird it was - she wrote a joke article on them once. "Magpies. You know you're known to be quite the little terrors." Ceres said with a small smile as she kneeled down.

"But I know you guys aren't that bad. Here -" She reached out toward it, if she could just get close enough - maybe she could nab one of its feathers. All she had to do was activate the skill and...

    "SQUAARRWAARRK!"

The magpie suddenly screeched at her and jumped at her, flying up and swooping at her head. "H-Hey! I was defending you!" She screamed as she tried to shoo the bird away. "I just wanted one damn tailfeather!" It gave another screech before flying up and into the distance- out of sight.

"Is this some sort of sick joke? Are you being a jerk to me on purpose?" She shouted out to the sky, shaking her fist at a harmless cloud rolling by.

At least she'd be able to afford a shower after this.

  3. "It took me a few tries to get the butterfly, and I only seemed to get the one - If I tried to get the flowers again it'd probably result in failure.." Ceres spoke her thoughts aloud as she walked. "Maybe the quest has something set into it, so each material has to be different. Or perhaps it was all just RNG? Damn I really wish I had the opportunity to look into this game some more..."

Ceres, being the gaming and entertainment journalist that she was - had been given a copy of the game and its software. But the game itself was a complete mystery. Everything surrounding it was on complete lockdown. It's why she was so excited to be able to play it in the first place. Having failed to be a Beta Tester - she had no intel - strong NDA's were in place to avoid anyone knowing much about the world before its release.

So...it left here in this predicament.

Ceres kicked at a rock upon her travels.

    A rock....

Selecting the gathering skill she picked it up in hopes that it'd turn into a material...but nope. Just a rock.

"Stupid Rock!" She spat as she threw it away.

  4. "I don't think what I said was that funny, was it?" Ceres asked. Completely oblivious to the fact that she was making jokes. Her lavender eyes glanced away. "You can't get drunk here, so you're really just saying you would dance for me. If the mood was right."

Her glance shifted to his dog, a two headed Cerberus. Odd Ceres assumed they would have always had three heads. Then again, this was a world were dragons were more common than buses, and one could no doubt ride a unicorn rather than a taxi. So, why should she question a two headed dog.

This man was incredibly.....boisterous. Loud. It was bothersome. Did he have to laugh like that? Really... there was no reason to. Ceres had been trying to pick his accent for some time, but it alluded her. "Still can't pick that speech..." She mumbled to herself.

Ceres shifted her gaze back to the red cheeked man. He still hadn't given her his name, but - she had failed to give hers. Ceres pursed her lips. "My name is Ceres - do you have one? Or should you just be Handy Man? Or would Laughing Man suit you better?" She tilted her head to the side. "I'd call you chef, but that sort of title would boost an ego and I don't think yours needs any more of that."

The redhead pointed to her HUD - "I was about to accept this Profession quest. Should I repeat what I said earlier? What do you think would be best? A cook or a merchant? I have no real need for materials and do not plan on fighting. I just want to broker information and live comfortably."  Ceres wanted to get the conversation back on track, lest the man start laughing at something else she said.

  5. Ceres lay there amongst the flowers for a few minutes, closing her eyes. It was quiet. Relaxing. The sun warmed her skin and the wind cooled it as it rustled the grass and flowers around her. They worked in tandem to create a harmonious symphony of pleasant weather. "I almost don't want to leave here."

But she had a quest. For the first time since she entered Aincrad she had a gosh darn quest. If she gave up on it now, then what'd that make her? Aside from the obvious answer of quitter. Doing this meant more col, more col meant better food than stale bread. A better nights sleep than a hard bed.

"Anything can be a material right?" Ceres asked - and in response she grabbed a flower with the material gathering option selected and -

    Boom

She held it in her hand, twirling it two and fro, the descriptor above it simply stating 'T1 Material'

"Ok...three more to go. I just hope that there's nothing more to do in this quest than collect these things. I really don't want to deal with a back and forth thing." Ceres muttered as she pushed herself off the ground.

Her clothes were dirtied, as were her hands but that didn't bother her.  "Where should I look next?"

  6. "Moss....water...baby fish...little crabs...sap...perhaps anything and everything could be a material. It'd be good to test this out and-" Another butterfly danced in front of her vision, actually, several did.

'Or I could just catch several butterflies and be done with this damn quest.'

Celes thought to herself as she reached out to [censored] one from the sky- but she missed. So she stepped forward to try again.

Ceres felt her boot catch on a....something (was there even anything there?) And she went tumbling, crashing down face first into a pile of white flowers.
"Oomph..." The redheaded woman coughed and spluttered, spitting out petals and dirt from her mouth. "So, I suppose that would count not as a fail, but a bad fail? Ugh..." Ceres propped herself up to sit on her behind, legs still sprawled out at her sides.

"Then...I wonder what a complete fail would be? Would it hurt the player?" She asked herself as she watched the sky, eyes dancing over the fluffy forms of cumulus clouds. "No. There'd be a warning if that were the case."

  7. The tiny orange winged bug danced again to and fro in front of her, as if it was taunting her. Ceres wasn't sure if the game was trying to give it to her or if it was just happenstance. Ceres had to guess that certain parameters would be met during the quest. This was meant to be a simple material fetch quest right? So it made sense that a material would quite literally be dancing in front of her face.

A small frown fell upon Ceres' lips. "Mmm...." Was she doing something wrong? "I was sure I had it right...I know its luck but my luck surely isn't that bad."

She opened up her HUD again, re-reading the information. Ah, she had been doing it right - but it was just a failed attempt. Some fails resulted in the material being destroyed. Or, in this case, she assumed it would result in the butterfly flying up and away.

But still, the little monarch danced so tantalizingly close. So - Ceres reached out.

"Eargh..." She had caught it between her fingers and the sudden feeling of the wiggling wings fluttering against her skin shocked her. To think the game was so awkwardly detailed. It stopped moving and when she moved it to her inventory Ceres noticed its title change to 'T1 Material'

"Well...that wasn't so hard - but what...else would I use? Is it all just butterflies? What about flowers? Mushrooms? Rocks?"

  8. "Right let's see... this thing tells me materials can be found in most places, as most items can be considered a material. So....I could potentially just roam around and pick at the grass and flowers, fallen logs - even butterflies in the sky?" She snorted. "Reminds me of Rimsky. Except this time I won't eat the butterflies I pluck out the sky."

The wind picked up as Ceres walked further away from the town. The breeze was warm and pleasant as it picked up her hair and ruffled her loose clothing. "Why would anyone want to bother running around dark caves or volcanic floors when they have the subtle warmth and serenity of this floor?" Ceres asked herself. And... in typical Ceres fashion, she responded. "Maybe they grew bored. It's why I'm doing this after all..."

Then, just as if on cue - a single monarch butterfly danced into her line of vision. She reached out to it, but it easily danced out of her grasp. "Ugh. Not as easy as Rimsky made it out to be....stupid thing. I'll show you."

  9. Ceres stayed on the first floor because...

    It was easy...

    Simple....

The weather was always perfect, to a fault. Would it kill to have some variation? The mobs on the first floor rarely spawned - and you'd have to be a downright idiot to be killed by one of the boars that roamed the fields. The place was quiet - aside from the children and those who chose to be their caretakers. Usually, the place held a peaceful and jovial air to it. If one avoided the seedier parts of town, they'd never have issue.

The town itself...The Town of Beginnings...these days it was virtually deserted. Not many players had chosen to stay there, why would they? When most the stores, materials, and excitement were all above? Ceres didn't care for any of that. Heck, the only reason she was really doing these quests now were out of boredom. "

Maybe I shouldn't have bothered to do these..." She mumbled, twirling a strand of hair around her finger as she walked. "Imagine getting out of this place alive, without having completed a single quest -wouldn't that be a feat?" She paused. "A feat in laziness maybe... but a feat nonetheless."

A brief message flashed across the screen as a booted foot passed the threshold into the town - signalling that in just a few metres she'd be leaving the safe zone. The redheaded woman rolled her eyes. "Like there is any danger here." Sure there were PKers, but when was the last time anyone saw one? Let alone so far down?

  10. Like many other stores, this one had a small series of chimes from a bell above the door. A quaint sound that signaled 'Hello I'm here' to many a shopkeep. Be they player or NPC - Ceres had avoided most player run stores. NPCs were easy to handle because their responses whilst varied and lifelike - were nothing more than systematic data. Code. Zeroes and ones.

The shop was small, each side lined with shelves filled with vials of all shapes and sizes. Filled with reds, blues, cyans, ochres...some sparkled, some fizzled. It was oh so befitting of an alchemic store. Herbs even hung to dry amidst the wooden rafters above, creating a pleasant earthy smell. Ceres closed her eyes and breathed deep. "I suppose this isn't too bad."

"Ah! Welcome, thank you so much for replying to my ad."

Ceres' eyes snapped open. Before her was the old man who stood behind the counter. Wirey gray hair, so long it fell down to his waist was brushed neatly back and out of his face, apart from two shorter bangs that framed a grizzled beard. He wore an outfit made from blues and whites, with pockets strapped over his chest. A typical alchemist archtype. "They make the old men so rugged and handsome in games, don't they?" Ceres asked as she approached him, scratching her chin. He bore a few wrinkles, but not many. And there was no trace of liverspots.

He replied, not to her comment, but in general - to her voice.

"If you don't mind, I require you to venture into the wilds and procure five Tier 1 materials for me, I nee them to craft some potions. Please would you help an old man?"

A popup appeared before here with the option to accept or deny. This seemed...arbitrary, she had already accepted the quest - "What am I going to do? Say no and start this conversation chain all over again? Ugh. obviously not." Ceres mumbled as she selected yes.

Zakariah clasped his hands together in a loud clap. "Oh thank you kind warrior. Your actions warm this old mans heart."

"I'm sure they do." Ceres said as she turned on her heel, reading the information that came up when she accepted. This...was actually useful. She needed this. It explained how to actually hunt for materials. Something Ceres had no care to learn earlier - and no knowledge on how to actually do.

"Tutorial Quests... at least it'll be easy."

  11. The sudden shadow caused Ceres to blink. "Oh...guess they programed clouds today. Always clouds...never rain..." She mumbled to herself. Still trying to decide between the two professions. "Cook? Merchant? I'm not sure I see many of either of them..." So deep in her conversation with herself Ceres was that she completely missed the first half of an introduction from the figure before her.

"-But you look like you could use a hand."

Soft lilac eyes rose from her HUD. Before her stood a tall man. His blonde hair a scruffy mess, and it looked like he didn't have a clue on how to wear a tie, why did men insist on wearing them if they didn't even know how to tie them properly. Wait. He said something didn't he? What was it? Ceres stared at the man who did nothing but smile wider as he waited for a response. Well, at least he was patient. How long had she been staring at him? One minute? Two? What was the social standard for a reply.

"I mean... I don't know what I'd do with it but if you chopped it off and gave it to me in a satin box, I guess I'd find some use for it." His response was a boisterous laugh as he lifted a hand to his head, pushing hair from his face.

"Oh. Wait..." Ceres tilted her head to the side. "Did I say that aloud?" He responded with a nod, stifling chuckles. "Ah. S-Sorry. I'm not used to...." She glanced away. "Yes. I've been here so long but am unsure of which profession to choose. I've ruled out everything except Merchant and Cook."

Staring was considered a faux paux by most - but for Ceres - it was how she did things, how she analyzed the situations and people around her and often she did it without even realizing. So she stared at the man before her with a half lidded gaze. He wasn't wearing any armor nor did he have weapons at his sides so he didn't just come back from an adventure or quest. His sleeves were rolled up revealing slightly defined arms. It wouldn't be a fashion choice....Her eyes darted to his messy hair then his tie.

    'Definitely not a fashion choice'

This meant he worked with his hands, and was no doubt just finishing up that work. "You just finished working your profession, right?" Ceres asked. She didn't wait for an answer, instead she continued. "I was wanting to do this quest, but I am unsure of which to choose from the two - a part of me is swaying toward Merchant - as I want to become an information broker - and I feel being a basic merchant would work well. I have no care for materials, weapons,  or armour....so the ability to break down and sell them appeals to me... but I am unsure of how many cooks there are in Aincrad."

There was a pause in her methodical speech. Her nose wrinkled. "You're not a blacksmith, most would wear their wares with pride. I'd say the same with Tailor...so, which are you Hand man? Performer? Are you going to dance for me?"

    @Oscar

  12. Quests.

    Of Course....

The key to bettering yourself in any MMORPG, ever, is through quests. Ceres always found them to be so damn bothersome. She spoke her frustrations aloud as she headed to the location that the marker was hovering over. "I swear if this is a damn fetch quest...it probably is right...." Ceres began to talk to herself, a terrible habit of hers. "Yeh. It would be." She began to tug on crimson strands of hair absently as her lilac eyes were focused on the map. "The first ones are always fetch quests. They're meant to be a simple way to introduce you to the game mechanics right?"

Ceres paused in front of the store - "Ah..." She turned on her heel and rose her eyes to read the hanging sign above ' Zakariah's Workshop' Celes rolled her eyes as she reached out to push the door open.

"Couldn't they think of a better name? OH let's create technology that traps thousands of people in a game but call the shop Zakariah's Workshop. Clearly they didn't have many writers there did they?" Ceres continued to mumble to herself as she entered.

  13. A profession

It made sense. It's what many of the players of Aincrad had. A way to earn Col. A way to live, a way to press forward in the game. One could theoretically survive doing very little. Ceres certainly had. But there was always more… and the aloof redhead was sick and tired, literally, of hard beds and breads.

"All these are rather...battle orientated.." Ceres muttered to herself, unenthused. She wanted to avoid that. Alchemists seemed to be a dime a dozen. And blacksmiths or tailors had their fare share of elite…

"No point shoe-horning myself into an oversaturated market...I want to work smart, not hard."

Ceres ran a hand through her hair, scratching her head in mild frustration. "Hrrmmmm…." Her face scrunched up as she flicked through the menu of choices with a slender hand.

"I'm not musically inclined...and my singing voice would probably have players running for the fields… so that leaves… cook or merchant…"

The woman was not one to bother others. Talking to others meant being social, it meant pleasantries and small talk. And if her previous encounter with Lessa had taught her anything.

It was that she was terrible at it.

So, to avoid these things she stood to the side. Unassuming, unimportant. No armour or weapons at her side. Ceres wore simple cloth clothing. Comfort over fashion or practicality.  Loose fitting long sleeved shirt and pants allowed the cool breeze to dance upon her skin, and a red overshirt gave her the extra comfort and support of covering her chest.

If she wasn't tugging on crimson strands of hair and talking to herself she probably wouldn't have drawn any attention to herself at all.

But, she did look a little crazy.

How many people constantly had a two way conversation with themselves nowadays?

    @Oscar

  14. Messy red hair fell loosely over Ceres' shoulders as she stretched, stepping out into the bright light of morning. Her arm joints cracked and the woman gave a satisfied sigh as she rolled her shoulders. That felt better.

The inn she has chosen to sleep in that night was cheap. Perhaps too cheap. It's beds were hard as rock and it's walls thin as paper. One didn't even need any ability or cunning to hear the whispers beyond the walls.

Too bad none of it was any value. Nothing more than banter among friends, a lovers quarrel - then things better left unheard. Let alone recalled.

Her lavender tinted eyes winced as she stepped further out into the sun, it's brightness stark contrast from the dreary ramshackle abode.

Ceres walked the streets of the town, here it was safe. Hell, even children ran about the streets, playing - laughing.

    Oh go be so ignorant.

"I'm envious of the little brats…" she mused to herself as she watched two of them playinf tag not too far ahead of her.

The life here was simple, easy. But...Ceres was growing bored. She was adamant she would not fight. Why bother? Why risk her life when hundreds of others were so foolishly ready to do the same.

"Perhaps I should get a profession of some sort…" Ceres said as she stopped in front of the quest board.

"But what, exactly?" Ceres mumbled as she shifted her weight to one side, crossing her arms over her chest.

  16. ROLEPLAYS
    *Appearing in Chronological Order*

Arc 1: Out of the Comfort Zone into the Fire
    entire arc description here

<<The First Few Lessons are Free>> Is this a FETCH quest?  SP4
Ceres knows that she has to start somewhere so she picked what looked like the easiest quest. It required no social interaction, no fighting, but...it was perhaps her least favorite thing in the world. A damn fetch quest. She grumbled the entire way through it, and upon realizing it was a quest chain she was about ready to throw the damn list into the fire - but Ceres was not one to leave things incomplete - so... onto the next one.

<<The Second Lesson, Is Also Free>> Oh NO it IS a fetch quest!  SP5
Know whats worse than a fetch quest? One that involves fighting Ceres never, ever wanted to draw a weapon in the game - she wanted to avoid battles and confrontation. Anything that could possibly leave her dead - but here she was, stuck alone, in a quest which required her to fight. Granted, it was the weakest creature in the game, but still... was she even capable of this? Her fears of fighting would have to be conquered if she were to complete the quest line.  By the end of the quest, Ceres was convinced that fighting was a very, very, BOAR-ing thing to do.

<<The Third Lesson, is Just as free>> But Fetch Quests will be the Death of Me! SP5
You would think after the drama of fighting all those boars Ceres would quit for the day. But, you would think wrong. Ceres is quite stubborn and told herself she would do her utmost best to finish all the quests before the days end. This quest leads her into a calming forest where she meets a kind NPC named Hannah - who asks her to venture into a cave to retrieve a gem.  Ceres struggles with some emotions as she realizes NPCs are far more human than she first thought.

[SP-F1] <<The Fourth Lesson, Is Actually Free>> The FINAL Fetch Quest
    Thread description here

    Idle no More
bored of just existing without participating in any real quests, battles, or much of anything an aloof and socially inept woman begins to contplate doing something to fight the boredom. She meets a bright and resilient woman named Lessa.

    The Coldness That Surrounds SP2
Ceres, finding newfound vigor and willingless to explore, ventures for the first time to a floor beyond the 3rd.  Arriving on the 4th floor she finds it cold, but strangely comforting. There she meets a stranger named Alkor - who treats her coldly, and chastises her. Going as far as to literally yell pointed accusations at her. Ceres tried her best to salvage the conversation bat failed. She blames herself for this, and begins to doubt that she should bother exploring further floors. Alkor is a butt.

    [PP-F1] <<Secret Medicine of the Forest>> Taking a Break SP4
A player by the name of NIGHT runs into Ceres - and whilst Ceres is a little apprehensive at first, especially after her encounter with Alkor but she quickly warmed up to NIGHT - Ceres admired how NIGHT fought - and it was here that NIGHT admitted Ceres' whilst unaware - was acting extremely forward, NIGHT admitted her sexual orientation and Ceres supported her. After that NIGHT seemed to calm down, and Ceres made her first friend.

    [PP-F1] <<Long Live The Queen>> I need a break SP5
NIGHT messages Ceres early in the morning and asks her if she wants to join in on a quest to kill a wasp. Ceres agrees and meets up with NIGHT, they take a relaxing stroll in the flowerfields and talk to each other about their emotions.

    <<Earning a Living>> SP5

  19. CERES

    Real Name: Candice McKay
    Gender: Female
    Age: 22
    Height: 157cm/5.7 Feet
    Profession: NIL

    NR39Frj.png<<History>>
As far as people go, Candice isn't exactly anyone special. She didn't live a poverty stricken life- she had no anguish. No dead parents. She didn't have a grand life, but it wasn't a bad life. Raised by a single mother, and two younger sisters Candice was just that. Ordinary. All in all it was...average. She went to University and studied lore, and written language. Candice studied Social Media and its algorithms in her spare time and quickly managed to acquire a portfolio of her work. She applied it to one of her passions. Gaming. Utilizing it she worked with profilic gaming companies - despite the adversary she faced for 'lel female lel'  Candice managed to succeed to the point where she became one of the main writers for a top review company, along with being a community manager working with several companies in the industry.

It wasn't the best paying job, but it let her travel, got her review codes and keys. And gave her the freedom to work on her own schedule. Even if that schedule was tightly packed and left little time for social interaction with those outside her work.

    <<About>>
Ceres doesn't care for fighting on the frontlines. Why risk her life when others are already doing the dirty work? It's not that she doesn't want to leave. Who would be crazy enough to prefer this place to the real world? But she is also not an idiot. There were others fighting hard - idealistic warriors, hopeful fools, and power hungry beasts. With those charging at the frontlines Ceres decided she would go for a non combative route.

Col was something to be obtained, same with materials - those had their uses, but what was even better? Information  She had her experience in sleuthing, and in digging around for hours for the smallest iota of details, and what better way to put her real life skills to use and not let them get rusty?

Of course, this was nothing compared to Game or Entertainment news. One would suppose Ceres would have to find out the hard way, as she is too stubborn to let anyone tell her 'This may just be a bad idea'

    <<Virtues>>
Perceptive: Ceres has a keen eye for detail. It was a requirement for her job to spot any mistakes before things were published, and as someone who watched people converse rather than join the conversations she became rather observant. Noticing the small nuances of others. A quirk of a brow, the nod of a heard. The tapping of a finger. Small mannerisms that would otherwise go unnoticed. Ceres takes note of these things and adheres them to the situation at hand to better understand her environment and the people around her.

Loyal:  Despite her flaws and her usually uncaring demeanor Ceres is loyal. Loyal to those who earn her trust, almost to a fault. Fierce and protective she will defend those few who break through the cold and aloof demeanor. Sometimes blindly following them into situations that she would otherwise avoid at all costs. Despite her loyalty Ceres would not take a life.

Driven: Once Ceres sets her mind to something, she will accomplish it. Her goals are sometimes simple, other times grandiose - but no matter the obstacle she will find a way to complete what she sets out to do. Better yet, do so without having to dirty her own hands. The exchange of col or information her preferred methods. Ceres does what she needs to do. A few scratches, bumps or bruises won't stop her. Nor will harsh words of viterol.
    <<Vices>>
Oblivious: Ceres is 100,000 percent oblivious. She is very forward in her actions, words, and mannerisms. Her overly friendly attitude can often get her in trouble as she just lands herself into awkward situations.  Whilst she can notice small details about people, and can be insightful - she will often misjudge something, misread someone. Or assume something that is completely wrong. Ceres needs to be told that her behavior is wrong or forward, because if not, she will continue to go on, utterly obllvious to how she makes others feel when interacting with them.

Easily Manipulated: Ceres may be perceptive, and may have a solid head on her shoulders but a lack of social communication, and an overall standoffish deposition has left her lacking in certain aspects of being social with others. She may be able to read others well, but the right person would easily be able to play on that and trick her. Ceres likes to think she is not easily fooled, but no person is completely immune to deception, and that is thrice true for Crles who may sometimes become too trusting, despite her aloof personality.

Stubborn  She has to be. Being told no, being told its impossible - or that she can't do it. She's heard that her entire damn life. Being a female in the Technology and Gaming field she's had to literally  fight and climb her way to her position through sheer will of force. Through ignoring those who tried to steer her on a different path or an easier direction. As such she can be a little...forceful, and not listen to reason. Even if that reason is perfectly sound. Some would have to fight tooth and nail to get Ceres to see their point of view and it will often land her in arguments.
