It's 1 mat per attempt. It's possible to save a material if it's a bad roll, and you get a 15+ on the LD. As you get to high ranks of your profession, you'll be going through mats pretty quick. Like, 8 mats a try.

Yup. One material per attempt, unless you're making crystals, which cost 2.
