NOTES

Spoiler
  • NOCTUA [ Ex-Fiance ]
    • Kind, and sweet, with one hell of a temper when pushed too far. Compared to me, she's very calm though, and helps keep me focused and centered.
    • Not really on speaking terms anymore...
  • TALA [ Younger Sister ]
    • Infuriating, mischievous, and admittedly clever...she's my little sister, through and through. Love her, but really wish she'd tone it down sometimes.
  • YUKIRO [ Close Friend ]
    • One of the first people I ever met in SAO. A good kid, with a lotta heart. Reminds me of myself a little. Gotta make sure he doesn't keep running off though.
  • NIGHT [ Close Friend ]
    • Another of my early acquaintances, that cool, calm demeanor of hers is just a façade though. Well, outside of battle at least. Extremely smart, an exceptional fighter, and very caring when comes down to it.
  • AZHODA [ Friend ]
    • Comes off as cold and calculating, which she is, and very goal oriented. She cares, I just don't think she's very good at showing it. Also, she has one hell of a fighting spirit. She really comes alive then.
  • ALKOR [ Friend ]
    • A real good guy, someone I'd like to keep around. He's got a lot of pain he holds onto, but he does his best to protect and help others. Can't really ask anymore of someone.
  • KASUMI [ ????? ]
    • ?????
  • SETSUNA [ ????? ]
    • A strange girl. Not sure that I'd call her a friend, or even that I know her all that well...In any case, I made her a promise. Maybe not a reason to live, but definitely a reason not to die.

VIRTUES, FLAWS & TRAITS

Spoiler
| VIRTUES | TRAITS | FLAWS

+ Loyal...: Once Koga has made a friend, he is loyal to a fault. He will stand up for those he cares about and fight for them without question. You can always rely on him to be there when you need it.

+ Caring: Koga cares deeply for people and will go out of his way to help those who need it. Although he may not always empathize with someone, he will do his best to comfort and support others. He’s the kind of person that you can turn to and talk to, and know you’ll have an ear that will listen and a shoulder to lean on.

+ Game On!: Koga is a gamer, through and through. He analyzes and understands game mechanics and uses this knowledge to the best of his abilities. Although a strategist by no means, you can expect him to have some form of insight.

+ Better Than Before: Koga strives to be better than the days he was before. He knows he is not the best version of himself that he could be, and he seeks to correct that.

+ Best Interests: Koga tends to try and do what he considers to be in everyone's best interest, even if it means putting himself at a disadvantage.

+ Unstoppable Force: Koga is a driven. Even without proper motivation, he will always get the job done, regardless of the obstacles put in his path, especially when they align with his own goals. The only thing that could possibly stop him would be a moral conundrum.

| Neutral Good: Although Koga tries to stay on the right side of the law and morality, he's willing to do things some might consider untoward for the sake of the greater good.

| Alone: Koga isn't exactly a people person. Although he is quite friendly and sociable, he finds interacting with most other people to be taxing. Even with those he's close to, he'll eventually begin to feel tired and drained from interacting with them.

| Oblivious: Although Koga is generally good at reading a room, he struggles when it comes to romantic feelings, his own and those of others.

| A Hill to Die On: Koga does his best to stand up for his beliefs, regardless if others agree. Although this might bring him into conflict with others, he isn't willing to compromise on who he is, regardless of the consequences.

| No Regard: Koga has little regard for his own life. Although this varies on a day to day basis, going between a willingness to give up his life for another, up to throwing himself at danger with no regard to the consequences, there is a constant lack of concern for his own well being.

| Mischief Maker: Koga loves to tease others. All in good fun, of course, but it can surely be taxing on others sometimes. Thankfully he can take as good as he gives.

- ...To a Fault: Koga’s loyalty, once earned, is hard to shake. This means someone could exploit his trust in them, and use him for their own gain. His trust in others may very well be his downfall.

- Fearful Avoidant: Koga ultimately fears abandonment, for any reason. He struggles to make meaningful connections with others because of this, and as soon as he allows himself to get close to another, he is quick to push them away.

- Spiteful: Anyone who wrongs Koga or someone he cares about is gonna be on his naughty list for a long time. Much of Koga’s determination is fueled by pure spite and will only drive him forward, to an almost blinding degree. Although he won't outright act against the subjects of his ire, he will remember their transgressions.

- Never Forget: Koga will never forget how he’s let others down. The memories will torture him, even if he never says anything. He might keep on fighting just for the sake of fighting, with no other drive. Until he finds a new cause to fight for, he’ll just be an empty shell of the man he once was.

- Own Worst Critic: Koga knows he's not the best version of himself he could be. He hates himself for every mistake, every flaw, and for not making the choices he knows he should have.

- One's Own Vices: Koga has a tendency to fall back onto bad habits in times of duress. Before joining SAO, he had been a smoker. Now in game, he turns to hunting, sometimes getting himself into reckless and dangerous situations.

HISTORY

Spoiler

Masato’s story isn’t an incredibly interesting one. He was born, left at an orphanage, and soon thereafter adopted by a regular, middle-class family. He grew up on stories and fairy tales. The kinds that featured terrible villains, and virtuous heroes. Suffice it to say that Masato couldn’t help but dream of one day becoming one of those heroes. When his parents got him his first gaming device, the young Masato instantly recognized it as his ticket to heroism, if not in the real world, at least in a virtual one.

As time progressed, Masato’s interest in the realm of gaming only grew. His parents, less so. The boy’s desire to enter and create virtual realms became a point of contention. They fought constantly. It was a waste of time. He ‘d never make a living out of games, they’d tell him. Watch me, he’d reply. The boy worked hard to learn the ins and out of games, playing them, learning how to develop and code them. Mechanics. He even started college and went to school for game development. He understood games as well as the people who created them.

To no one’s surprise (and the anger and disappointment of his parents), Masato purchased the NerveGear as soon as he could, and even stood outside of a game store for a whole afternoon and night with a couple of his friends, Hikaru and Tsukiko just to play the first VRMMORPG in existence. Sword Art Online. The group logged in. One of the trio, Hikaru, disappeared bursting into blue fragments before a few hours had passed. It wasn’t until the Game Master’s announcement later that they truly understood what that meant. Their friend hadn’t logged out. He’d been deleted. Killed. And they wouldn’t be logging out either.

Well, this was Masato’s chance. His chance to be one of the heroes he’d always dreamt of becoming. Except now, the prospect was far more daunting. Could he protect Tsukiko? Could he ensure that they made it out alive? He didn’t know. Up until now, Masato had made it a point to never make promises he couldn’t keep. But when Tsukiko asked him to promise that they’d both get out of SAO alive, he broke one of his few rules. A choice he’d come to regret.

SAO had been Tsukiko’s first RPG. It would also be her last. One slip up. That was all it had taken for Tsukiko to die. Masato never forgave himself. He still hasn’t. For the past two years, Masato has done nothing but sit in the same village, doing only enough to survive. But he’s had enough of sitting around and feeling sorry for himself. He’s had enough of letting others die for his sake. It was time to leave Masato behind. It’s time to be the hero.

THE STORY SO FAR

| ACT I: RELATIONS

Spoiler

Since Koga finally struck out on his own, he's met some interesting people. Yukiro was among the first, who helped the man attain his first Katana and showed him how the skill worked in the game. The next person however? That person was Noctua. Although it wasn't necessarily love at first sight, Koga and Noctua quickly fell for each other, and on their first meeting, he almost died, in part thanks to her inexperience in combat. Blaming herself, Noctua was about to leave the first friend she'd made since the game, but Koga stopped her, promising to not leave her side. After that, the two quickly grew closer and entered into a relationship...But happiness wasn't exactly going to last long. In came Akiara, Koga's younger sister, barreling back into his life.

At first this was a good thing. Koga had his sister back, who wouldn't be happy about that? However, things quickly began to turn sour as Akiara, who went by Tala in-game, soon grew jealous of Noctua stealing away her brother's attention. Although it became clear to Koga that his sister was, yet again, plotting something, he still wasn't certain what...

| ACT II: TRAGEDY

Spoiler

Things had finally started to look up for Masato. His sister was finally starting to get along with his now fiancé, they'd made a healthy handful of good friends they could rely on, and they were all levelling quickly to boot.

But life has a way of knocking you down when you're at the top and sending you straight back down to the bottom. Once again, Koga lost everything that was dear to him. His sister, his fiance, both died. The game took them and once more Koga was back in the hole he'd spent two years digging himself out of. How much more of this could he take?

Koga hid himself away once more. The Ring and Sword remained closed, and if it weren't from his name not appearing on the Monument of Life, the world might as well have assumed he was dead. To be fair, Koga had thought about it. Many times. Even gone ahead and walked to the edge of a floor and thought about jumping off.

But Koga's got too much of a will to live for that. Or maybe its just spirit. More likely spite. He made a promise again. Not to protect others, and help get everyone out of this game, like last time. This time, all he wanted was vengeance. To bring this world down, and then distribute justice to those who wronged him and thousands of others...there is work to be done.

| ACT III: FALL

Spoiler

Koga had been distraught. His return to the Iron Castle had been fraught with struggle, both external and internal. What was once a man determined to protect those he loved had become little more than a hollow shell, who's only reason for living was to spite the world that he was born into, and to take away everything from those who had done the same to him.

It was his friends that brought him back to life. With the help of NIGHT, and some newly made friends, Koga was beginning to become whole again, and come to terms with the death of those who he had held most dear.

It was not meant to be.

By sheer chance, he stumbled across Noctua in the caves of Floor 10, not dead, but very much alive. Learning that his sister and lover still drew breath should have brought the man great joy, but instead it brought only pain. Finding out the truth behind Noct and Tala's disappearance opened up wounds, new and old.

| ACT IV: STAND

Spoiler

There were somethings that words and acts simply could not mend, try as one might. Despite extensive efforts from both himself and Noctua, it became clear to both that they would never recover the trust and faith in each other that they'd once had. Agreeing it was for the best, they decided to remain friends, and move on with their lives. Now, with a heart still healing, Koga returned his focus to the frontlines.

Although Koga had a goal, he found himself with little purpose. Once again, he felt himself simply going through the motions, levelling, preparing, and doing what he saw as little more than his job or duty. Assist the Frontline in their united goal of escaping Sword Art Online. He should have felt some measure of direction or guidance in that fact, but instead he felt empty and hollow. What did it matter? He didn't even want to escape, not really. In fact, he wanted to die in here. Life in the real world was not only mundane and boring, but ultimately meaningless. At least within this virtual prison, he had some reason for being.

It wasn't until a chance encounter with Kasumi that he began to revaluate his desire to die in the service of the greater good. That chance encounter ended with Koga feeling confused and uncertain, an position he was entirely uncomfortable with. This alone, however, was not enough to push Koga towards active change.

The Wolf made it to the Frontlines, just like he had planned. The state of the front was not what he'd expected. Bordering disorder and infighting, it seemed as if old wounds still festered among the front's ranks. The raid itself, however, showed the great capacity for change that an individual could posses. Prior to the fight, Koga discussed at length with Freyd, Baldur, his party leader, and Hirru, another party member, and acquaintance. They each explained their reasoning for being there that day, and although they differed, the core was similar to some extent. To help others.

This discovery almost came into question during the fight itself though. After defeating Gabrandr, the Front was prompted with an unexpected choice. To spare or kill the fallen king, who claimed to only be trying to save his people. At first, many were of the mind to quickly dispatch the king and move on. It wasn't until after the rash and nearly offensive actions of Hirru, NIGHT and Koga that others began to more carefully consider their choice. If not for the King and his people, but for the Front itself. They could not fight together if they allowed Cardinal to drive them apart.

After the end of the Ladonian Revolution, Koga began to make a serious attempt at understanding not only his feelings towards Kasumi, but also his place in both Aincrad and the real world. This struggle continued until a short series of conversations with Alkor and Jomei. The first, with Alkor, addressed his concerns about his purpose, and that ultimately, his purpose was his to choose and to act on. Then with Jomei, after killing a mysterious and terrifying mob on Floor 25, Koga learned that if he had any desire to live again, he needed to learn to move on from the past, and learn to be vulnerable with others.

Although he has yet to find either his purpose, or the will to bare his heart to another again, he now looks for answers to those questions, a quest all his own.

| ACT V: REST

Spoiler

Things come and go. People, places, things. Nothing is permanent, but its this impermanence that makes them all the more precious. For the longest time, Koga told himself he'd understood this, but, as one does, he had simply lied to himself. Eventually deciding he needed to come to terms with the deaths of his friends, and to let go of his own guilt, Koga undertook a quest wherein he delved deep into the depths of his own mind, fighting against his fears and regrets in a near-fatal battle with himself. A battle such as that, however, does not end with a field littered with corpses. It ends with tears, grief, thanks and gratefulness.

Not long after, Koga once more faded into obscurity, only this time to his own home. The restless desire to throw himself headlong into certain death had begun to dissipate. There were things to live for now, not just reasons to die. People he cared about, things he wanted to see. Even if he still had no desire to return to the real world, a part of him still wanted to see it again. In particular, see someone again, in all their imperfection. Time would tell if that were ever to occur, but for now, Koga returns to the field, called to battle once more.
