[BR-F25] Paving the Way to Floor 26 [Shadow, the Malevolent]

Recommended Posts

The paladin's motivation overtook her hurt spirit. Up until this point, she had solely relied on the fact that nothing was capable of breaching her defenses. It was an idiotic assumption to believe that she would be invincible in this situation and she'll kick her own ass when this is all over. Even still she had a job to do, but she would need to recover first. Summoning one of the healing crystals she was supplied with, a wave of freshness overcame her, closing the gapping wound in her chest ever so slightly.

The tendrils of darkness that washed over every party chilled Yuki down to her core. What sort of monster was this? Unlike any other she had seen since she began her journey in Aincrad. However, if she didn't focus now and put her mind on what was in front of her she was going to see the end of the road for her journey, and all that road has at the end is a cliff.

The bright frozen-burning aura around Yuki melted the shadows into a goo at her feet. Little did she know that was just coincidental timing on her part, but it still rallied her spirit. The paladin shined like a lighthouse over the foggy ocean - like the north star on a pitch black night. Yuki gritted her teeth and yelled out at the top of her lungs. "Whatever you say will not tarnish my spirit! Your deception is nothing but gasoline to the fire that is my beating desire! You hide in the darkness like a coward while forcing others to do your bidding, nothing but a mice amongst lions! You have no right to analyze us!"

The comment of Bahr's girlfriend had caught her attention, or at least had made her double-take when it was said to Crozeph. Her eyes trained to Bahr and gave the man a smiled. She had no who his girlfriend was- Wait, now that it had come to her, she remembered seeing her at the boss meeting thread. They quested once, Lessa was her name? "Bahr! Don't let his pitiful excuse of a jest cloud your thoughts. He's a rat looking to get under your skin and kill you from the inside! When we've sent this demon back to hell, you will see Lessa again!"

The pinkette turned her head back to the minotaur, raising her gleaming sword to him. "Time to put an end to this! Someone switch with me! I need time to heal back up!" The paladin charged forward at high speed, slashing to no effect. Practically no damage, but that was the essence down of Yuki's capabilities. She always bit back when things bit her.

“I’ve noticed that you haven’t struck the minotaur a single time. Why is that?”

It was cold. The shadows had coalesced into a sort of viscous sludge, swirling about Bahr and tugging at the peripherals of his coat. While the physical discomfort threw him off balance, it did not sting so much as the Shadow's taunting. It wasn't enough that Bahr was failing - the Shadow had made it its mission to highlight his shortcomings and bring them to the forefront. As the obsidian liquid oscillated about in revolting fashion, Bahr hung his head shamefully.

“Is it all a part of your plan, or are you simply failing yet again? Failing, just like you failed to protect your friend from that goblin? Just like you failed to protect your girlfriend from me?”

Like a jolt of electricity, the true meaning of the words surged inward from all of Bahr's extremities to his core, then raced along his spine and straight through the top of his skull. Everything became hazy as he did everything in his power to inhibit his natural inclination to rush headlong into the heart of the darkness and square off against the heinous creature himself. To seize the Shadow by its neck and thrash it against every surface in the arena until nothing remained. Or were the welling tears in his eyes the culprit of his vision loss? Try as he might to understand, or decipher, or comprehend, he couldn't.

The anger was the first thing he felt. Bubbling like a witch's cauldron, hot and unyielding, its ingredients hatred and unbridled contempt. As the concoction stewed, new ingredients entered the mix. Dismay. Regret. A fear unlike anything he'd ever felt. He himself had been on the brink of death before. He'd witnessed firsthand Lessa in an identical situation. None of it compared to the cocktail of dread he currently felt. Though, through all of it, the most familiar of the emotions roiled to the surface. A lens through which he was comfortable expressing the tension.

Rage.

Eventually, he felt its heat in the palm of his hand. His eyes, both dyed in scarlet, flickered to the source of the numb throbbing it produced. Without having noticed, he'd charged up a Sword Art. How long its high pitched whine had been humming away was lost on him. Its crimson glow bathed the surrounding liquid darkness that had now gone tepid in an unsettling mosaic that only seemed to stretch its unnatural shadows further and further the brighter Dawn's Demise became. Smoky obsidian tendrils crept along the blade as streaks of ivory shot back and forth, both the weapon and its owner unsure which myriad of explosive energy to unleash upon the poor, misguided entity. Whatever moisture had filled his eyes moments before, too, had been boiled away.

Somewhere nearby, he vacantly heard someone trying to get his attention. Trying to tell him it would all be alright. But he was fixated on the steam that now rose from his glove, the odor it carried that of scorched fabric and flesh alike. Absently, he wondered how many health points were being wafted away with the smoke. There was no pain or buzz to accompany the damage - only the numbness that had pervaded his every pore since the initial jolt had passed. Twin fiery orbs remained fixated on this steam as though his life depended on it. And in a way, it did. Somehow, amid the violence and carnage and yelling and everything else that had filled the chamber with chaos, the self destructive burn was the only thing that kept him grounded. That reminded him that doing what he wanted to do would only lead to further self destruction.

And oh, did he want to do it. He'd held onto this Sword Art far beyond typically allowed. The burn was there to remind Players to allow the system to take them through the motion, else the Sword Art would be wasted. No doubt it was a powerful one. Bahr half expected that, should he find his mark against the Shadow's neck with an attack like this, he'd watch its head skitter across the shattered floor. His eyes left Dawn's Demise and slowly searched the darkness beyond, a dual red glow that could bring a ship to port in a storm. If the Shadow was there, it was imperceptible. There was nothing he wanted more than to follow through with this desire, even in knowing the inherent danger and risk it presented.

Nothing, except to make sure she was okay.

"Floor Seven," he breathed, voice barely audible to even himself. "She said she was going to be on Floor Seven today."

Finally, the glow subsided. The steam perished. Crimson flooded from his left eye, and he was left with the typical Christmas combination he'd come to be known for. One shaky hand reached into his coat pocket and produced a rectangular azure crystal. He stared at it for a moment, wondering if what he was about to do was the right thing. Would he really forsake the Frontlines, and the party that relied on him, for the sake of hearsay issued by a floor boss that was almost certainly contorting Bahr's whims to fulfill its twisted machinations?

Yes.

"Teleport, Nimbus," he finally announced, waiting to be whisked away in the following seconds. Instead, he was greeted with panel, heralding an insidious message.

nonfunctional.png

What?

As his eyes repeatedly scanned the alert and burned its words into his mind, he could not fathom, nor comprehend, how this was the case. Nonfunctional? Was this also the Shadow's doing?

"Teleport, Florenthia." He'd use the stairs. If that was what needed to happen, then it was what he would do.

nonfunctional.png

Again. This was no accident. Something was going on.

"We're trapped," Bahr said aloud, as though anyone in his vicinity was actually listening. "Something's happening to the rest of the castle. The Teleport Gates are cut off."

He dismissed the panel, eyes blank, mentally searching for any alternative to ascertain his love's wellbeing. After a moment of contemplation, an epiphany arrived. He summoned his menu, the typical chimes drowned out by the ensuing noise that encircled him, and immediately navigated to the friend list panel. He scrolled until he found Lessa, tapped on her name, then breathed a sigh of relief.

It was there. Her location data. She wasn't gone.

Immediately, the rage burst to the surface once more. The Shadow had lied to him. Referenced the passing of his best friend, then transitioned straight into a threat on Lessa's life. It was inexcusable. The tension had grown so powerful that it locked Bahr in place, frozen like a statue, unable to heed his instructions to charge forth and annihilate everything before him. But the moment Bahr took his first step, he knew it be over for everything that stood in his path.

The Shadow had just tapped into a fury of which it could not comprehend. Bahr wasn't sure how it knew the things that it did, but clearly it hadn't been paying enough attention. It would be smote by Bahr's righteous opposition the moment it reared its grotesque head for the chopping block.

Beat listened to the shadow who seemed to be trying to orchestrate the battle indirectly through coercion and deceit. Even what he seemed to be alluding to was true, it wouldn't make sense to trust him. Still, his words seemed to have an impact as the attempt at purification was made. Beat shot a glance towards @Shield as he was quickly reminded of the issues that occurred during the Elven Council fight. He had done his best to forget that some p-layers on the frontlines had forgotten that the npcs, monsters and bosses in the game were just data.

Can you blame someone for losing perspective though? We've been here for so long...

Beat's spear began to glow as he eyes his target, charging towards the minotaur and releasing another barrage of strikes, his form multiplying and seeming to strike from a multitude of angles all at once. The young player took note of where he had struck and returned back to the safety of his party.

It was quite irritating to hear Shadow talk about so many things but it was understandable. "Those who like to sit on the back can only talk while the ones in the front do all the hard work" he muttered under his breath. He was still behind Yuki, his arms stretched forward, ready to cast a healing skill for her or everyone in the party. Yuki used one crystal already and if he uses a heal it would secure her on the safest spot they could make in terms of health points.

Lots of comments about the players, what is this fight even? master chef? next top model? got talent? the list could go on but the azure-eyed player bit his tongue, there's a job to do and he needs to heal everyone now just to make sure. "shadows are approaching..." he felt wary of the shadows closing on one of his teammates, Bahr. It was a heavy blow to mention his girlfriend, Crozeph knew, he'd be losing the remaining sanity he had if he lost Yuki but not today and never will. "You might wanna make your insults a few levels higher, not even close to what George Carlin would spit," he told the Shadow with a smirk on his face. Crozeph's hand began glowing white and soon enough, a white band of light appeared around his party.

Crozeph hand stopped glowing after the band of light disappeared and his stretched out hand was now clenched, with a middle finger for at the Shadow.

Your gentle wishes haunt me, I hear you calling...

Mari grit her teeth, why? Why was he targeting all the other players, taunting them? Fiddling with them - casting their shadows in whatever way he saw fit. Granted- one of which was Oscar wearing what appeared to be a frilly maid dress - Mari wasn't sure, the amalgamation of darkness was ever shifting, like a carpet of fetid maggots - and it was a struggle to see any clear picture.  Mari took a cursory glance over her shoulder at the Shadow. "Tch." It had...for the most part been ignoring her. But - in all honesty, that was for the best, right? Mari didn't care about its useless taunts. They had no real effect on her - but...what about the others? Concern filled drifting azure orbs as they danced over each player within her party. Their health had began to dwindle. Why was hers fine? Why was she left untouched? Unbidden? - wasn't she the one who had caused the most suffering here? THe player with the most sins crawling on their back? How was this fair? The one who didn't want to exist? When everyone else here had someone, something to fight for and waiting for them on the outside - why was she the outlier? Mari forced her eyes shut. Guilt ebbed at her, it seemed almost comical. Even now , in the heat of battle. Mari felt like she was just...there. Floating, existing, and yet not - at the same time. What a strange feeling. She felt as though she could walk away from the field, and narry a single person would blink an eye. How easy would it be to just keep wandering till she found the edge.

Each night I try to sleep - but I'm falling, failing.

But....if she did that, others would surely die. Another gaze at the health bars of her comrades, and Mari noted that the friend she held closest to hear heart was in trouble, his health bar blinking a warning yellow. Mari pulled out a crystal, and crushed it in her hands.

"There." Mari opened the palm of her hand and let the remnants of the crystal scatter across the unseen wind, sprinkled and glittering - the orange sands rested gently upon @Macradon's taught muscular arms - as his skin leeched in the soothing dust - his HP bar increased, but no - that wasn't enough. "It's about time I did some healing for a change." Mari breathed as she extended her arm high above her head, and with a twirl of her wrist - the members of her party all recovered 20% of their initial HP.

She noticed @Bahr miss again, and winced. The frustration and guilt he must be feeling...should she reach out to him? Say something? Mari chewed on her lower lip. What would the point be. He'd probably think she was just...tricking him or something. Mari's eyes widened then narrowed when she saw the shadows circling him like predator to prey. Fuck it. Let him be pissed at her. Mari had stopped begining to care what others thought.

With sure and steady steps Mari approached Bahr, unceremoniously stomping hard on any shadow her feet had the pleasure of stamping out - till she stood in front of Bahr. Mari tilted her head to the side, already, that confidence was fading. She chewed her inner cheek. Shit. What was she supposed to say to him? Mari was terrible at rousing words. She thought they were stupid. So, instead of saying anything, Mari simply reached out and gave him two small pats on the shoulder.

Pat-pat.

Everyone else was fighting, everyone else was doing their best. Even if Mari didn't entirely agree with healing or trying to purify Orgoth, she understood the desire to protect life, and couldn't fault anyone for trying.

All she could do, was stand by - and wait.

“The limit of my powers?”

The ex-Paladin turned his attention from Bahr to the boss. “You truly believe that you’ve figured me out? That you have even the slightest idea what is actually happening right now? You stand there, so cocksure, insisting you’ve seen it all. You think you know what I’m capable of? You know nothing.”

A small smirk appeared on his own face. "You're right. I know nothing at all. I'm just some ant that just aimlessly found myself unlucky enough to face you." He slid his weapon into its sheath. "The brightest lights cast the darkest shadows. You may be that shadow. However... that means in this metaphor we are the light!" The flame and void swirled inside of him. He allowed his mind to enter a state of complete focus and he became invisible to his own feelings and thoughts. His body and even the game would carry him through the motions, he just didn't need to let his thoughts get in the way. Even if just for a moment.

Streaking across the battlefield, he unsheathed his weapon, his internal fire bursting as he followed through with a singular clean strike. Red shards poured from his victim which became consumed by his weapon. While normally he was a force of control, keeping his target down and unable to fight; now he was a force of self-sustenance. Dealing great damage while healing himself.

He turned to his comrades. The tank had taken quite a few blows, but with the help of the party she was back in the safe. He looked to the man that had casted Field Medic prior. "You're also using katana, It siphons a lot of energy. This isn't the real boss, I'd quit attacking and save your energy for the real fight. We're going to be relying on your healing."

Shadow's taunts fell on deaf ears for the simple fact that Pinball found the AI talkative and obnoxious.

Everyone seemed so focused on shelling out their life stories to this thing that it almost felt the cavernous void was full with the clashing of words rather than steel. Aggravating. Where he'd used to avoid the frontlines for fear of their "just retribution," now it was more because there was hardly a soul on the vanguard he could actually stand. People were egotistical. Stupid. Creatures of boring habit. It made him want to scream.

If these people were Aincrad's best, Aincrad's best were a joke, and he wanted out. But he still had something to fight for, so he couldn't leave.

His own hiding would have long since faded by now, so, with a practiced twirl of his weapon, Jack's Hellfire gave way to Cold Fervor. There would be no special tricks, no secret skills or traps that would come into play -- Pinball fell back on his old practice, his old style, and his old practiced way of thinking. If there was an insurmountable creature to be fought, its strength oh so fearsome and absolute, Pinball would simply hit it until it died.

A flash of light and flecks of snow would follow a flashy, blue and white assault. He could tell by the way his strikes registered on the animated minotaur that it was considerably sturdier than him (not that that was saying much), and that it was definitely built to handle a full raid team digging into it. It was strange, though. It must have a second phase. They'd barely started, and they'd already gotten it so low?
