  1. Although Shield had already felt naked when he first arrived, with the realizations of the actual dangers of the world around him beginning to set in, he felt even more naked. It was like Kayaba could just sit back from his invisible vantage point and look right through him. Although his digital body remained impassive, he was almost certain he felt the echo of a shudder, as if his physical body had done so. Thinking of his IRL body now seemed like such a strange thing. He felt so distant from it, though he knew it was right there. It was like lying next to his ex-wife after some of their more bitter feuds. Though physically he was near, there were oceans and continents separating him from himself. His eyes shot a sidelong glance at Beat.

There was no time to be ruled by new fears. Shield's mind was already racing to tackle the obstacles at hand as he took inventory of his reluctant ally. They were starting characters plopped into a world with very real consequences. Furthermore, although his own build choice would be invaluable, not even the best tank would be cut out to solo floor bosses, unless said tank was grinding unnecessarily long on low level monsters in order to far exceed the level of the floor in question. There was no telling how many of the players even had people to care for their physical bodies. To that matter, Shield was not even completely sure if anyone would care for his.

He shook off this line of thinking. Surely there was a registry of players. Once news spread of the incident, the authorities would set about rounding up players to transfer them to hospitals. Still, this was an odd situation that he and his rival had gotten themselves into. It was hard to find words other than the obvious, so he did not force any. Instead, he opened his radial menu and navigated through the options. With a few taps and a soft notification chime, a small dialog box sprang to life in front of Beat.

Sending the invite felt strange. It was like being back in school again and asking someone you didn't know particularly well to hang out. However, awkward or not, this was the game state.

    Shield

    - Real name: Raynor Baldovini (Only known to specific players) - Age: 36 - Gender: Male - Height: 6’0” -

Home - Rank 5 Merchant Shop - Character Sheet

    Personality and Appearance

    Spoiler

Raynor’s dark brown eyes are cold and distant when at rest, which is cemented by the matt of medium length, dark hair overhanging them. His frame sports the typical starter iron chestplate. In a perfect world, he would have more to cover it, but that would only come with time and lots of loot grinding.

He bears a long but faint scar across his face that runs from the corner of his jaw up to the opposite tear duct. Although making him appear more battle-hardened, it is a mark of his weaknesses more so than his strengths. Rather than by a car crash or sports injury, it was given to him by his now ex-wife when she hurled a toaster at his head before leaving with their children. He had originally preferred his created avatar, but the mirror he held on day one of Sword Art Online had brought to the forefront the very feature he had been so eager to cover up with pixels and polygons.

Because the mark always feels so obvious, his sharply angled jaw is typically stern and rigid. He tries not to scowl, but it’s rare to see more than a fleeting smile cross his features. Even with all of his gloomy expressions and his tendency towards stubbornness, he is a kind person at heart. However, said heart has remained locked away behind various pixelated suits of armor for the better part of a year now, and once he makes the right loot rolls and can manage similar gear in SAO, that does not seem likely to change any time soon.

    History

    Spoiler

Suddenly alone after the unexpected divorce and the loss of his two children in the ensuing custody battle, Raynor was left with very little to comfort him. As any red-blooded American would be, he is proud to have steady work as a statistician. Still, with no family to come home to, he shifted his focus and free time into gaming for relief and fulfilment, quickly using his numerical proficiencies to develop an online presence as a highly skilled tank builder in MMO’s. Without meaning to, he earned himself the name ‘Shield,’ which is now the name he uses exclusively online.

It was in the upper echelons of the MMO Crossreign that he first encountered the professional gamer and top-tier DPS, Beat. Quickly recognizing each other's’ skills, the two developed a rivalry and butted heads too often to count. Raynor, whose experience in statistical analysis helped him find the most efficient and effective means of leveling and loot grinding while still managing a full time job, was often looked down upon by his highly dedicated opponent as lazy, earning himself considerable ire during their many conflicts. Due to their opposed skillsets and bitter rivalry, they were often sarcastically referred to as The Unstoppable Force and The Immovable Object.

Before long, with skill trees exhausted and levels maxed, the two found it impossible to settle their scores properly, their fights eventually being settled by lucky rolls rather than skill. Their original game played out to the point of exhaustion, they decided to strike out onto a new battlefield: Sword Art Online. Their plan was to play for a year and decide the ‘winner’ as the first of them to reach level 100 of Castle Aincrad. However, their plans quickly changed, like all players, to that of survival and escape. In the face of death, Raynor reluctantly set aside his pride to fight alongside Beat, who, although insufferable, was more than skilled enough to call a worthy companion.

    Virtues:

    Spoiler

Impassive: His cold demeanor makes him very difficult to read. This carries not only to his face but also his body language. If an opponent has slighted him or invoked his temper, it will be difficult for them to tell, as will it be to call Raynor’s bluffs.

Even-Tempered: His response to the hardships of his more recent years have given him a very thick skin. Although he has emotions to spur him forward, he does not let them get the better of him. It is not impossible to get under his armor, but it is very difficult to provoke him into careless action.

Calculated: Unlike his counterpart, he does not act on whims. Raynor weighs his options as carefully as possible before forcing any major decisions. This can prove an annoyance to those who are in a hurry, but it has saved his life in-game on numerous occasions, as it has those around him. Good luck getting the latter to admit as much.

    Flaws:

    Spoiler

Cold: Although well-meaning, his countenance is often so stern and his actions so calculated that he has great difficulty endearing himself to newcomers, and even those who he has come to trust. His aloofness is easily interpreted as judgmentalism and his insistence on calculated action often reads as being argumentative and bossy. If he could open up and show those around him a softer side, it would be much easier to see his true intentions, but either due to unwillingness or inability, such moments are few and far between.

Weakness - Children: Due to the hole left in Raynor’s heart from his children being cruelly stripped away from him, nothing wrong-foots him more than encountering children in SAO. If a child is in danger, all of his virtues are compromised, making him rash, transparent, and volatile. What’s more, if an opponent is particularly young he may be able to maintain his defenses, but taking any offensive action takes a heavy toll on him and is often half-hearted. On the flip-side, if anyone saw him interact peacefully with children, their perceptions of Raynor as cold and uncaring would immediately vanish.

Stubborn: Because he is so accustomed to being the voice of reason, Raynor tends to think of dissenting voices as being unreasonable and is quick to dismiss them regardless of their validity. With time, he can be made to see reason, but in the moment, if someone disagrees with him, he has an almost visceral need to disagree and press his point. This flaw is most prominent when beside his counterpart, Beat, due to the contrary nature of their past interactions.

    Story Thus Far

    Spoiler

After discovering the treachery of Akihiko Kayaba, Shield has put aside his differences with Beat, teaming up with his former rival and setting his sights on freedom, hoping to earn the chance to see his children again. Unbeknownst to Shield, Beat - his once rival and now "wife" - has struggled with whether he is happier in the game than in his own life back home. A day may come when Beat can no longer fight to free the denizens of Aincrad, and if that day ever comes, the two must choose whether to dissolve their alliance, or worse, to oppose one another as they once did in their days battling fiercely in other MMO's. Recently, however, there have been other secrets that Beat has kept from him, not least of which the reason for his his long disappearance.

    toy

Early on in the process of honing his skills in SAO, Shield encountered a strange old man who ended up being a copy of a programmer's personality inserted into the game. He taught Shield the skills necessary to start his work as a merchant. Shield's shop, Everyday Miracles, has become the most prominent and successful of its kind in Aincrad, his skills of uncovering hidden, unique qualities to equipment are unrivaled, though a recent updates to the game changed the process and complicated his business. With the mastery of his craft attained, Shield is breathing a little easier. The question is whether he'll get too comfortable and forget to keep fighting for his freedom.

Thus far, his progress has not slowed, and due to his diligence, he has earned himself a place on the front lines as one of the game's foremost tanks as well as a place in the upper echelons of one of the more prominent guilds, The Celestial Ascendants. He acts as the sole Tank Sentinel under the guild's Tank Paladin, Jonathan. Despite the gratitude for his position and the honors and benefits accompanying it, he struggles with the fact that in a guild that stresses helping players advance, he and Beat have been more or less self made with very little assistance from his guild mates overall. He is caught in the moral dilemma of whether to stay and fight upstream to make the guild what he feels it should be or whether to strike out and create his own from scratch. The guild in recent months has begun to unravel, and as it does, Shield has begun making bigger plans for the future of Aincrad.

He has begun to run out of valid quests to complete, and thus his skill progressions have slowed considerably. He has shifted much of his focus to beefing up his scouting skills to hunt and identify rare and unique items. Although it is a slow, arduous task, it is one of the few remaining ways by which he may improve upon his build in any meaningful way.

Shield has also taken it upon himself to carry on what Rain once did for him, namely, to carry low-level players through quests leaving them the spoils of the adventure. As payment, Shield charges them with the task of doing the same for another player when the opportunity presents itself. One player that he has met in such a way was a woman by the name of Calypso, who tends to have a bad habit of her feet, hands, and mouth writing checks that her stats can't cash. Their familiars seem to have taken a liking to one another, not to mention that there is some comfort in having a companion who is closer to his own age - at least closer than most other player he has met along the way - and the two have already completed a number of quests together.
